I have been unsuccessful in finding out how long one should be on the SCD before results begin. I am going onto week three and see little if any results. I am wondering if I may be an individual for whom the diet does not work. The book says a month and I was hoping this would be something that would work for me. Any suggestions or thoughts regarding how long it should be before I start to see results would be appreciated. Thank you

This is probably too little too late as you posted this in December, but I tried SCD two ways- first I tried it with all of the legal foods (except for advanced foods like beans) included, then I tried it with the phases outlined by SCD lifestyle. I found when I dove right in with all the foods, I didn't see any results, but when I followed the phases, my symptoms (blood, mucus) cleared up on day 3! I am now eating everything legal, including beans, and haven't had blood in over 4 months.
The idea behind the phases is that your gut is ulcerated and needs to heal. The intro and early stage foods are easy to digest and give your gut a bit of a "break" to heal itself before you get to the more advanced foods. It really worked for me!
I can't speak highly enough of being on SCD. My energy levels are amazing, I have lost weight, I have tapered totally off my rowasa and cut my lialda dosage in half!
Please let me know if you have any questions at all.
Best,
Lauren

I am sorry that you are not getting quick positive results. Everyone is different so hang in there. I am on week 4 and have had my fair share of set backs but I am definitely seeing positive results.
As to possibilities why you are not seeing the results you want...I do not have links to sources so this will be more something to help direct your own research.
Egg whites have been shown to increase inflammatory response. I could not handle them or eggs plain at first but I tried them again a few days ago and it seems to be ok.
Prednisone increases your blood sugar levels artificially , so high carbs could exacerbate the problem of feeding the bad bacteria in the gut. I noticed a huge difference when I cut back on the honey. At first I could not get enough of it.
The primary goal of the diet is to not feed the bad bugs, and replenish the good ones. Too many carbs even though they are legal could slow down the process.
Hang in there and good luck!
Ask away as well

Thank you for the words advice and encouragement. I will try to follow your suggestions. Yes, I do think the nuts may have made it worse. At least for now, I have eliminated them. I keep hoping to see improvements but presently it is worsening. But perhaps some adjustments and patience will eventually show improvements. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Give the diet several months and then look back. Apparently it takes longest to work for uc. I have used scd type diet for 5 years and it really does work. It was a good year before I was certain it was helping my uc but other minor problems vanished without trace which encouraged me to carry on. You need to be very strict and expect some backwards steps on the way.
In the beginning I made lots thick soups with bone broth and vegetables. Do add plenty of good fats such as butter, animal fats and coconut oil. I make scd French cream instead of yoghurt. It was good for too much weight loss in the beginning but be careful that yoghurt and too many nuts are not making things worse. They need to be introduced with care.
I think the fats are critical. We are so used to being told to restrict fat that it seems wrong to add enough for scd. I certainly didn't at the start and at one stage was quite worried about continuing because of too much weight loss. Be very patient and don't take too many supplements. After a few months on scd it becomes much easier to feel the effects of any supplements.
Best of luck.

Thank you Alan for your response. You are always one of the first to respond to people’s questions and concerns.
I have eliminated all flour (except for flour I make from ground almonds), and I begrudgingly stopped dairy, except milk used to make yogurt according to the book’s instructions, even though I have never to my knowledge had any problems with dairy products. I have been eating honey, egg whites (or at least whole eggs), and butter. My doctor asked that I stop talking all my supplements for a week until I have new blood work. I have been eating some nuts, I read all the labels to be certain there are NO additives. I am presently on prednisone, although I am slowly being weaned off of it and presently only take 10 mg a day. I take 1.2 GM of Lialda daily and my doctor says I may be on that medication for a long long time. At the time I was diagnosed with UC, it was fairly mild, 3 – 5 times a day. It progressed over the next few months to severe, 30 – 40 times a day. I have been out sick (family medical leave act) from work since October and was hoping to return to work by 12/19, but I am still struggling with this flare up and uncertain that I will be well enough to return next Monday. I am willing to try any suggestions since the medication has given me some moderate relief but not anywhere close to enough to return to work. I will have a few days where I am somewhat better and then several days where it starts becoming severe again. Any advice you are able to give me would be appreciated. Again, thank you for all of your dedication and hard work to assisting and answering questions.
