Desire to Eat

Mon, March 05, 2012 3:34 PM

I am hoping someone has tips for making yourself eat even when you don't want to.
Since one of my main Crohn's symptoms has always been vomiting, I eat to live instead of live to eat.
Every day when I get out of bed, I vomit stomach acid that has built up during the night, despite that I eat something small before bed and that I take acid reducers. My friends call me "3 bite Rachel" as a joke because I literally cannot eat large portions of food. I also suffer from EE, an allergic-like condition that makes my esophagus extremely tight, so I actively have to battle a choking feeling to swallow my food when I do eat as well.
Naturally, I think this has conditioned me like Pavlov's dog to have my stomach churn where food is involved and it has become just a necessary evil. I want to throw up just by putting food in my mouth, almost like a pre-emptive response that my body has gotten so used to. I know how important it is to keep my nutrition up, but it is becoming more of a mental battle just to get through meals. How else do people deal with not having an appetite or aversion to food without it impacting your health severely?

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. The choking problem makes it so much harder for you to eat. I think the Ensure, Boost and all that has mostly sugar and junk in those. I think you need more of a meal replacement that is predigested so it won't be hard for you to digest. I follow the SCD Diet but in your situation
I would google Listen to Your Gut and order there AbsorbPlus shakes. They are all Predigested and will actually help you keep the nutrients. The woman that created it had Crohns and realized she needed to do something. She has created this system and book and the meal replacement called Absorb Plus. She has been Crohns free for over 19 years following her Protocol. Not sure it all works but it sounds like you need to drink those several times a day. Then when you can't eat you will still gain weight and get all the nutrients.

Good Luck

Google and do the Research

I follow SCD Diet and read the Book Breaking the Vicious Cycle.
I was diagosed last March. I am on no meds except LDN Low Dose Naltrexone
with no side effects.

Have you tried drinking protein/diet shakes such as Ensure, Carnation Breakfast, and the like? They may help you  might be easier for you to hold down and give enough calories to sustain energy. I know this does not answer your question directly, but I hope it helps you get the dietary needs to keep you going strong.

There is also the BRAT diet: Bananas (ripe bananas), Rice (white/refined), Applesauce, and Toast.

When in doubt, ask your Gastroenterologist.
.

Have faith, and best wishes!
