Hi. I have crohn's disease and ibs. I am having a tough time wanting to try fruits and vegetables because I'm scared of them causing me a flare up. With my flares I get horrible nausea. I know to some the nausea may seem minor but it really knocks me off of my feet, especially when I'm at work. I am a kindergarten teacher. I know everyone with ibd have different symptoms and can tolerate some foods more than others. If there is anyone out there with suggestions I would appreciate it. I have tried the SCD and a lot of those foods bothered me. Thanks again!

Raw foods are the absolute hardest to digest, so ease yourself back into the process gradually. Avoid salads (obviously!) for a while, and anything else that's super gaseous inducing, for example kale or brussels sprouts (anything in the cabbage family, really!). Try starchy vegetables first (corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes) and then gradually maybe zucchini, mushrooms, carrots, and bell pappers (all cooked!) See how your body handles that and then go from there.

If you want to get some vegetables into your diet but have been having trouble with that whole digestion process, there are three different things you can try:
1. Thoroughly cooked vegetables, and perhaps stay away from things like cabbage and broccoli for a while.
2. Juiced vegetables. You have to be a little careful with this, since the juice can be surprisingly strong stuff, but it is a way to get fresh vegetable nutrients without the fiber.
3. Seaweed. My favorite is wakame, which can be reconstituted in water into something almost like spinach, and again, low fiber. Hijiki and arame are also good. I make miso soup with all of these, and they are generally all really easy to digest. I find them at asian markets and natural foods grocery stores, the prices can be drastically different though, almost always cheaper at the asian market.
