Sooo, I have only been diagnosed with Cohn's disease for a year...but recently had a bone density test that showed osteoporosis. This is a bit hard to swallow...particularly given I am not even 35. Anyone else??? If so, what are you doing? I am not eager to add another med to my collection...let alone a daily shot in the stomach (Forteo). Any suggestions on diet modifications or etc?

Thank you all so much! This information was VERY helpful. I had no idea about the cost of the treatment. I was spending my time grieving for how I could have osteoperosis instead of doing my research. Thanks for the kick in the pants to get moving on understanding this thing!

You should take Vitamin K2 Mk 4 as well as D3. Our diets are very deficient in K2 and it is very important for bone metabolism.
Read the information about osteoporosis on Jack Kruse's blog. Some really useful information.
Before you go any further with the Forteo, check with your insurance. You're looking at of least $1,000.00 per mo. cash price. After the 2nd month I would have been thrown in the donut hole. My Dr. suggested it and after I checked he changed me to Reclast which is a once a year infusion. It also goes right into the vein and bypasses the stomach. I had mine in August I go for my first scan next week. I also take 3 calcium citrate pills daily, extra 5000 iu vitamin D and try to get calcium fortified orange juice etc. One problem I've come to realize is when Dr's put a patient on prednisone they do not put them on osteo drugs. Steriods will pull the calcium out of your bones faster then anything else. Walking is also the best exercise you can get. Whatever you and your Dr. decide on, I wish you the best of luck. Marilyn

Liz was also diagnosed with Osteoperinia. She was only 7 at the time! I think it was due to the meds she has been taking for so long.
Good news though, with the addition of D3, calcium supplements, and weight bearing exercise, she has built her #'s back up. Now she doesn't have to get dexa scanned every year, but now 2-3 yrs. It can get better.
Good Luck,
Lizzies Mom

Thank you so much for the response. Yes, I have been reading and you are right it definitely seems to come with the territory. My doc did the same for me (vitamin D, calcium supplement), but also wants to add Forteo. A daily injection in the stomach or thigh to help build back bone mass. This makes me sad...usually people have this issue AFTER menopause...but I keep telling myself it would be worse. But, it does suck after to worry about a fracture!

I was diagnosed with Crohn's at the beginning of the year. At that time my doctor had me get a bone density scan which showed that I have Osteopenia (what you get before Osteoporosis). I am only 36. My doctor has put me on 5000 of Vitamin D and 1500 of Calcium per day. Hopefully it helps. Supplements may be the only way to go. I decided to go ahead and take them even though I am already on a whole bunch of medications (unfortunately for others issue non-Crohn's related). I am beginning to learn that with Crohn's that all this medicince and testing just comes with the territory. Good luck.
