Royal Jelly?

Thu, December 06, 2012 9:08 PM

Royal Jelly with honey has a reputation for being healthy and it promotes feelings of well being (ie. decreases anxiety).  I have Chron's and had one surgery for part of my small intestine.  Would this potentially be harmful to try?

Royal jelly varies in composition depending on where the bees came from regionally and what the local flora looked like.  It is generally safe, but there have been rare cases of bleeding in the colon associated with it (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1440-1746.1997.tb00472.x/abstract), so I would talk to your doc before giving it ago.  Also, if you have ever had a bee allergy it can be dangerous to take royal jelly.

There is some small evidence to show royal jelly has anti-inflammatory properties, but there is no good evidence to show it has any impact on Crohn's or UC.
