College accommodation are hard to find. In fact, while looking for one, I ran into a fake diploma maker. Some weird people are out there!

I'm a sophomore in college and I'm about 6 hours away from home and my GI. Fortunately, I haven't had to utilize this, but if you're going to a school that's a ways away, try to find a GI that will be close to you in case you ever need to see one and can't make it home. Also, as well as talking to the disabilities counselor, if your school has a clinic, I would talk to the head of the clinic to let them know what's going on. 

As for rooming, I've had 2 different roommates both years and they've been super chill. I didn't go into many details, but both knew that I had to take medication for something. 

I also recently joined a support group hosted by our counseling program. It's not specifically for IBD, but actually for Chronic illnesses in general, but it's been really cool to meet other students that are going through something too and just talking and being able to relate to them has been really great. It's also nice to talk about my illness for me instead of for other people for once, so I would highly recommend reaching out to a support group and if your school doesn't have one, find a way to start one :)

My name is Kameron, I’m the same age as you, I have Crohn’s. I haven’t gone away to college, however, I have been Dual Enrolled for the past semester and have navigated the “accommodation” scene. Basically, they’re gonna want a written diagnosis, to “prove” that you actually need accomodation. It’s also WAY important that you have information on your symptoms and how they’re debilitating. Definitely don’t down-play it, or else you could find yourself sick and stuck with limited accommodations like I did. My accommodations were:
1. Time and a half on timed exams (in case I had to use the bathroom)
2. Extended time (per my professor’s agreement and at their discretion) for assignments due
3. Absence accomodation, which is basically unlimited absences due to either treatment or incapacitation
4. Service Dog Access, legally they have to allow my dog access anyway, but they wanted it written down somewhere, and of course to let my professors and other students know.
Now, I don’t have experience with office for students with disabilities on living arrangements, however, I did take some classes at SCAD this summer, and lived in the dorms. For me, what worked was having my own room/a roommate that understood what was happening. The way it was set up was a “suite” of two separate rooms (each with two occupants) that shared a living room/kitchen/bathroom. I had my own room, then two roommates in their double-room. My dog was actually like my roommate. The set up might be different for you, but that’s what worked for me. Good luck! Have lots of fun in college!

Hi Jordan!  I hope I can help.  I also suffer from Crohn's (was diagnosed at age 9, now 27 years old), and I actually work professionally as a school psychologist in a high school setting, so I know A LOT about accommodations :) . I began remicade infusions every 8 weeks my last semester in college, but I can tell you that many insurance companies will cover at home infusions from local nursing agencies.  Check with your Doctor regarding this, that way, they can come to you in college (disregard if you are already aware of this :) )

Now, in terms of accommodations, most if not all colleges/universities will provide you with what you are receiving now in terms of in the classroom.  If you have a 504 plan in place, your college can receive that information with your consent, and that will drive the conversation with your future college counselor at the disability office.  If you do not have a 504 in place, I would look into that now before you leave school, because it will make the process easier for college if you have a set plan in place now.  Your parents can request a meeting to discuss this with your current guidance counselor.  Also, your gastro can suggest this, and would also be a good resource in terms of questions/suggestions when speaking with college disability counselors.

Here are some tips of what to ask to gain more information, for college purposes:
-Private bathrooms or close bathroom access?
-Test accommodations? Assignment/project accommodations?
-Having priority in scheduling your classes if you think you may need to only have class certain times a day depending on bathroom activity
-What types of counseling or behavioral support is available?
-What support to they have in place for medication administration, if necessary
-Excusing of absences in emergency situations?

hope senior year is going well! My name is Blair, i just turned 20, and i am in my second year of college, and was diagnosed with crohn's this past summer after years of brushing aside my stomach troubles as minor. Although it's definitely hard to be away from home,  if that's your choice, it is managable. Having your own room and bathroom is really amazing, as i didn't have my own room or private bathroom i know how much worse that was. If you are still struggling with symptoms i have found letting my professors know what i am dealing with to be really helpful. All of them have been very understanding and will hopefully make sure to accomodate you and your needs, be it sending you the worksheets from class or letting you send in pictures of your homework or sharing them, and letting you do things online. Accommodations can be helpful for students in college.   The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits colleges, universities and trade schools from discrimination against students with a disability.
You must request accommodations.   In college, these accommodations can apply to dorm life, not just to the classroom.   They might include modifications to testing, seating, absences and a private dorm room or bathroom.   For test taking and supports like "stop the clock" it would be best to speak with someone in the college disability or support service office.

Also if you have most of your bathroom activity first thing in the morning, it might be best to schedule classes late morning or afternoon.

Hi :)

I am actually relatively new to all of this, but i do have my own small experiences so far.
I am currently in my second year of college, and started having the symptoms close to the beginning of this year. (frequent bathroom visits et..)
I live in a dorm with 2 other girls, but at least have my own room (better for those times with pain or other symptoms when you just want to curl up and be alone). So i do have to share the bathroom - but at least for me it hasn't been too much of an issue.. it seams to usually be free when i need it. and yes, i am aware that this is lucky ;)
Aside from the living accommodations, during classes i don't have a problem - i just sit near the exit and leave when needed (people come and go all the time). During finals i have a note that says i can go out and use the bathrooms whenever the need arises.

this is how it is for me, but i don't know how other school operate (I am also not studying in the USA)
