I am traveling to South Africa and have been advised to take anti malaria medications. I am very nervous about taking these when I am so far from home. Has anyone had an experience with this? Thanks in advance.

South Africa has many dangerous insects, especially mosquitoes. Mosquitoes there are much more toxic than on other continents, so it is necessary to advise you to bring anti-cold medicine. In addition, you need to bring long-sleeved clothes and some necessary medicine as a precaution for the trip. suika game

Sarah - I have so many questions for you. Do you take Humira? If so, I'm looking to travel long term as well and I have hit brick wall after brick wall regarding how to get it covered. I can't find any insurance that will cover it while I'm abroad and I don't know how to go about accessing it when I'm aboad (I get mail order right now).I will be in Spain, New Zealand and Thailand over the course of 12 months. As much advice as you can give me would be AMAZING.

Hi, I traveled internationally for a year (2017-2018) and took malaria pills with me. I only took them some of the time I was on the trip, never in South Africa. I would say it depends on which part of the country you will be in and what season? I would also advise not buying the pills in America because they are super expensive and really cheap overseas. From my experience there is no actual pill that will prevent you from getting malaria but that will mask the symptoms, kind of like cold medication. That is why it is so cheap overseas because it is as common as cold medicine verses here it is not. When I took my pills if I didn't eat enough with them it made me really nauseous and one time I threw up from them. There is also another kind of malaria pill that gives you really strange nightmares, so most of the people I traveled with decided not to take their malaria pills. Thankfully none of us got Malaria! Some people are anti taking malaria pills because it just masked the symptoms not prevent. I decided not to take mine because I hated feeling nauseous. Instead, I just wore longer pants, covered my arms. wore bug spray, or other preventative measures.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
