anal fistula plug

Thu, April 09, 2009 12:00 AM

I posted a message before, asking about a bio plug.  I looked more into the proceedure, and I found out that it is actually called an anal fistula plug.  Has anyone ever had this done?  What should expect and what is the healing time after the proceedure?  Any information will be helpful.  I'm due to have the surgery in May.

I had an anal fistula plug "installed" last year after many times of draining an abscess and a fistula that just wouldn't heal. The recovery time was pretty minimal - just a few days, similar to any of the other rectal procedures you've probably had done in regards to the fistula/abscess problems! My doc said that these work in about 70% of the cases to heal up those areas and allow them to close off.

I'd say that overall, it didn't feel any more painful or take longer to heal up than any of the other times I've had the abscesses drained and setons placed, etc. Best of luck! Hope it goes well!
