Antibiotics and a flare up

I understand your concern.  My daughter has UC and has been in your same situation for the last month fighting strep, tonsilitis being on rounds of antibiotics.  She takes 2 Ultimate Flora Critical Care 50 Billion probiotics per day.  You need to talk to the pharmacist as to when to take the probiotics after or before you take the antibioitcs.  There are certain antibiotics that are worse for UC patients so you need to ask the doctor about it.  Usually a Z pack is what my daughter takes that is "ok."  But first talk to your doctor about it.  Here's what her prediatric IBD specialist said about antibiotics:  Z-pack or Bactrim are ok but to stay away from Augmentin, Amoxicilion which may cause GI problems.  My daughter was just on a low dose of something which started with a Cy something (sorry I don't have the Rx) which did cause GI issues but she was ok on it, thank goodness.

I also believe my Crohn's started after heavy antibiotics after an ear surgery.  However a natural antibiotic will not react the same way to your Crohn's, like Garlic supplements.

I sympathize with you. I believe my colitis all started with antibiotics. I had a tooth infection. Which was caused from taking prednisone. Well I had to take penicillin, I could feel it burning my insides. I am now very careful when I am getting a cold or stuffed up. I use musanex, keeps everything clear so you don't form an infection. Lots of water too.

I am often given Flagyl and Cipro when I have a flare (along with prednisone). My IBD is complicated with diverticulitis though. I also take s. boulardii and Culturelle even when not on antibiotics.

My daughter was on antibiotics for 3 years for her acne (Menecyclin and amoxicillin).  As soon as she stopped it, she developed UC so I'm sure taking the acne medicine started her UC.  I worry everytime she is on antibiotics.  My daughter has had constant tonsilitis and strep for the last 2 months.  She was fine only 1 week.  She has had 4 rounds of antibiotics starting with Augmentin, Penicillian, the antibioitc I can't remember cy something and now a Z pack.  The ENT said she has to get her tonsils out.  We have been very worried about her on all these antibioitcs also.  I am now worried about her getting her tonsils out at 20 years old.  I totally understand your concern about antibiotics.  I would discuss it with your IBD specialist or GI doc plus the pharmacist.  My daughter takes 2 probiotics per day 50 billion in the morning and 50 billion in the evening.

I am also scared to take antibiotics but I also agree that you should take probiotics that can help to prevent one.   For me flagyl and cipro are the worst so I stay away from those.

Good luck and feel better

antibiotics caused a 1 year flare for me... and they also set my UC off in the first place before I ever had any kind of GI problems...
