please help!
I'm very embarrassed about my teeth. I have severe anxiety about the dentist and haven't been in a few years. I know I need Dental work. I'm supposed to start Humira and worried about infection. Do I need a work up from my dentist? Am I safe to start if I were to have a dental infection how quickly does it spread on Humira?
I do know the most logical answer is to go to the dentist. I am working towards getting past my phobia. But I really need to start the Humira to feel better. Help!?!?i

Hello Sgamom3
I am sorry to hear about your concerns but your question is valid. It's important to learn as much as possible about your medication, and adalimumab (Humira) is a biological therapy that many patients with IBD take to manage their disease. Your specific questions about dental care will be best for your doctor to answer. Be sure to address:
1. What are the side effects of this medication?
2. If I have dental concerns, do I need to take anything into consideration before starting my medication?
3. How can I ensure my dentist and my gastroenterologist (or primary doctor) are aware of any important matters related to my dental concerns?
4. Speaking to your dentist, it may be a good idea to call them in advance and consult on some of the issues and concerns you have.
If your appointment with your GI, or healthcare team is too far away, be sure to call and ask if you can connect with them on your concenrs by phone, or use the online communication portals (if your doctor's practice uses this). Maybe a virtual visit could be helpful here too. The main point is, make sure you get your answers from your doctor before taking any steps that you might be concerned about.
Good luck!
