Hello. My GI doctor has recommended Stelara, and I am nervous. I have never tried a biologic. I have been on mesalamine to control my Crohn's symtoms since being diagnosed in 2008. I was in remission for about 10/12 years, and then around 2018/2020, I started have flares here and there and was prescribed prednisone during those times. Does anyone have any experience with biologics or Stelara specifically? How has the experience been for you? Were you worried about side effects before starting injections? I am so scared. I don't want to make my disease worse by changing medications, but I have the feeling it will get worse if I don't change medications. Please....any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi! It's understandable to be nervous about biologics. Many have similar anxieties starting Stelara. I started on it a few years ago after mesalamine failed me. Side effects were minimal. Maybe distract yourself with something fun and engaging like Wordle Unlimited while you wait for your first dose to kick in! Remember that proactive treatment can improve your quality of life. Good luck!

Stelara (ustekinumab) is a biologic that targets specific proteins (IL-12 and IL-23) involved in inflammation. It’s approved for moderate to severe Crohn’s disease when other treatments haven’t worked well.

Stelara is FDA-approved to treat Crohn's disease and works by targeting interleukin-12, fall guys, and interleukin-23, which reduces inflammation without suppressing the entire immune system. However, they still have side effects such as fatigue, headaches, and mild upper respiratory infections.
