I get mouth ulcers/canker sores about once a month or once every few months. I'm not sure what causes the flare ups, but I am currently experiencing the worst flare up of my life. At least 50+ ulcers on inner lips, tongue, gums and all down my throat. So literally my whole mouth. I cannot eat or even really talk because of the extreme pain. It makes it hard to sleep and I even drool a lot when I sleep now because of it. They seemed to start healing up and fading and then I got the burning/tingling feeling in my mouth again and they came back. What can I do to ease the pain and help to avoid these flare ups???

Try having a table spoon of clarified butter(ghee) before going to bed
I used to have ulcers since I was a boy. I had it all through my teenage and still used to have it until last yeart
Then I started having clarified butter before sleep, and it has almost never come back.

A healthy adult has about 100 Trillion and 1k types of probiotics(PB's)(good bacteria) (from natural birth and mother's milk).
But, antibiotics, aging, stress, medicines reduce our natural probiotics.
PB's help us break down foods and help elim. bad bacteria and viruses-(they are 70% of our immune system)- this reduces inflammation.
Without PB's, we can develop food intolerances(bloating, pain, etc.) and may not fight off bad bacteria. And we lose digestive enzymes with age. Some find help with 'proper food combining'-eating different food groups at different times.
-Inflammation is usually a sign of infection or allergy.
-Ulcers are caused by bacteria, Many with CD have ulcers thru their system. 'Ulcer' is in the names 'UC' and 'UP". Listentoyourgut.com offers advice for mouth ulcers.
The number one cause of flares is stress.
The bad bacteria can get through a weakened gut lining and into the blood stream(ie: anywhere in the body).
-Many people (incl'g md's) with almost all auto-immune's are posting that PB's are helping their symptoms,
incl'g RA, psoriasis, eczema, lupus, fibromyalgia.
Bad bacteria may also cause alzheimers, parkinsons, mood, anxiety, etc.
And most injuries/surgery cause adhesions, which cause pain - there are natural treatments.
-The key is to find the right kind and the right amount for you.
-Start slow and work up to higher amounts. I started with 5B/day, now I take ~60B/day.
- I keep them refrigerated and take them 2 hours after dinner on an empty stomach.
Nature's Bounty Ultra-10(at Costco) works well for me and my lactose intol. Renew Life is recommended on several sites. You can open the capsule and put some of the powder in yogurt until you've worked up to higher amounts.

I too have mouth ulcers which only disappear when I get my Infliximab infusion. They then reappear three weeks later and remain until the next Infliximab treatment. This started nearly two years ago when I started experiencing active Crohns symptoms three weeks prior to my treatments. I usually get around 20 to 25 ulcers. Under the tongue, inside my gums, at the back of the throat, inside my cheeks and on the floor and roof of my mouth. I get to the point when eating is so painful, I lose my appetite. I cannot eat anything sweet, acidic, spices or food textures which scratch. I am also very limited on foods I can eat anyway as so many exacerbate my diarrhoea. It is difficult for my partner as I wince with each mouthful of food. Bearing in mind that the active Crohns is causing pain, nausea, diarrhoea, endless flatulence, low grade fever - this is the worst symptom. The only thing that helps is taking Paracetamol before eating. Ice cream is good as it numbs the mouth. The ulcers are far less troublesome in the morning but as my stomach is worse then, I cannot eat much. Keeping my weight up is problematical so I eat as much as I can in the immediate period after treatment before the ulcers start troubling me again. If I find a cure, I will let you know.

I get mouth ulcers as well along with in my stomach. I found out from my dentist and research, that it is a symptom of Crohn's and there is nothing we can do for it that I know of. Everyone is different with symptoms. I keep a notebook to write all my symptoms to include: foods that cause inflammation, pain in particular areas of the body, physical well-being, etc. This just helps me to analyze and stay away from anything that causes the inflammation. I hope this helps.
