Peri-anal Crohn's

Mon, June 01, 2020 10:11 AM

Hi all, I'm writing on behalf of my husband.  He's 41 years old and was diagnosed with Crohn's disease 1.5 years ago.  For the past year he has been on Remicade, which greatly reduced his symptoms.  He was first diagnosed by colonoscopy because he had a painful anal fissure that wouldn't heal.

Unfortunately, two months ago he developed a peri-anal abscess, and he was in severe pain and had to go to the ER.  He ended up having surgery, which left him with two drains and setons.  At the time he was told the setons would be in for 3-6 months.

Today he had a follow-up visit with his doctor.  They said he might need to have the drains and setons in place for the rest of his life because he has severe peri-anal disease.  They won't take any further action until his inflammation goes away, but they aren't really sure how to measure that.  The Remicade does help (it got rid of his recurrent mouth sores, his fissure has mostly healed, and his BMs are now generally regulated).  He gets an infusion every 6 weeks.

He was on short-term disability for the past two months, but tomorrow he will be returning to work.  His drains are still painful and uncomfortable, and the drainage continues.  He's very depressed at the possibility that he will have the drains and setons forever.

Does anyone have any experience with perianal abscess and setons?  Is there any hope he will actually heal?  Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi, I'm really sorry to hear about your husband's situation. That must be really frustrating. I don't have any experience with peri-anal abscesses or setons, but I have had other various peri-anal complications from Crohn's in my last 6 years with the disease. Although I can't give you any advice, I do want to give you my support. Crohn's disease sucks, for both the person directly affected and for their loved ones who watch them go through it. I wish you two the best. Sending prayers for strength and healing.
