Clostridium difficile or C. Diff is a bacterial infection that mimics IBD flare up symptoms.  Research suggests that IBD patients experience a higher rate of C-Diff infection.  Have you been affected by C.Diff?  How long did it take to get under control?  Share your experiences and information with other patients in the community.

Should also mention that the C. Diff spores can last on surfaces like your counters, bathroom, etc. for months.  The best thing to use to kill C. Diff on your surfaces is bleach.  We went to town with the lysol+bleach.  Our apartment smelled heavily of bleach, but I felt better afterwards.  The GI doctors at the hospital said that regular detergent would be fine to wash clothes, but I could use something with bleach if I was really concerned.  It was also suggested that if you use community/shared washers, you should run an empty load with just detergent after you wash your infected clothes to minimize the spread of C. Diff.  We were living in a graduate student housing complex with lots of little kids and families.  Didn't want to give anyone else C. Diff, especially little toddlers and infants!

Last year I tested positive for a C. Diff infection while I was hospitalized for severe bleeding from my ulcerative colitis.  After being discharged, I was prescribed vancomycin for 2 weeks.  There were further complications with my ulcerative colitis (inconclusive tests for co-infection of CMV, treated anyway to be safe), so I was back in the hospital the next day.  Spent another 4-5 days in the hospital and before I left, I was told that the C. Diff was already gone but I still continued with the antibiotics as scheduled.  No telling when I got the C. Diff infection but once caught, it was gone in about a week/week and a half.  My stool went back to normal (last time I had a "normal" bowel movement was months before!). 
The biggest lesson I learned was that C. Diff is not killed by hand sanitizers, foams, or other alcohol based solutions like that.  Only soap and water will do the trick.  So since then, have been washing my hands frequently (before and after preparing meals, before eating, after petting animals, etc.).

The better part of my first year post-Crohn's diagnosis was impacted by repeated bouts with this nasty infection.  C. diff is ridiculously hard to eradicate (and I am perpetually afraid that it will come back), and, in my experience, an even larger problem is that the clinical testing practices for C. diff infections are far from perfect.  The standard toxin tests are not as sensitive as they should be (meaning they someone can test negative while still being infected), and alternative tests are either no better or not widely used.  Because this bacteria can be so dangerous for anyone infected... and potentially even more so for IBD patients because it can be confused with a disease flare... it is one of the topic priorities that I will soon address on my blog (irunforresearch.blogspot.com).  I discuss many current areas of Crohn's disease research on my blog to educate about advocate for more research into IBD.
