Pain Management

Fri, December 27, 2013 1:30 AM

I've had UC since I was 16, I am now 28 years old. What are some things people do for pain management? It is quite awful for me, it feels like a double sides sword in swimming around in my stomach most days. Of course, I am not on any medication. I typically take Asacol HD; however I am uninsured at the time and do not know how to obtain the medication at a reasonable price or even the generic at a reasonable price (which most pharmacies where I am at don't carry the generic to asacol, actually none of them do, I reside in Ft Myers, FL).

Also, what has it been like for people when they have to go out to a restaurant and eat? I find I have a lot of trouble because once I eat one bite, I have to go to the restroom for an hour, then I stand up, and then I have to go for another hour, and that continues so I pretty much waste any food I order at a restaurant. It's difficult when I am at work, so I typically refrain from eating lunch at work or breakfast before work otherwise I am usually late as I have to use the restroom forever. It really sucks, it seems to have gotten worse and interrupts my daily life a lot.

Sometimes, marijuana helps with the pain but I can't use that because of my job so I havent used it in a few years now. I really hate this. I become irritable and angry when I am in pain and people annoy me more when I am having trouble. What's worse is no one around me seems to understand. It can be kind of embarrassing. I don't particularly like to go to the bathroom at a restaurant for 2 hours. My bathroom at home has pretty much become a shrine.

Thank you so much for your reply. It will be helpful I'm going to go get some probiotics now at the drug store and see what happens! I do take some antacids but just tums once a week or so, I don't typically have heartburn that often. I mostly only eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and then fish/chicken no red meat hardly ever only for special occasions if I feel like I can handle the pain the next day.

It was very thoughtful for you to reply :)

Hey! I can totally relate to what you're dealing with...I've been there!!! I used to actually time the stomach pains...think they were every 45 seconds or so at one point. Anyway, I'm 30 and was diagnosed at 17 and have been dealing with this a long time. I've tried many different drugs, but only remicade helps me to live a somewhat normal life, but it's crazy expensive and you need insurance to cover it. Without it, I slowly deteriorate. You said you don't have insurance, so remicade isn't an option for you, but have you tried Probiotics? I had to go off remicade for awhile and pill form probiotics help a lot!! You seriously notice a difference the same day and they totally help regulate your system, so you're not going the bathroom so much. Sounds like you may have ulcers too in your stomach with the amount of pain you're having. Anti acids can really help with that. I really like Omeprazole 40mg and it's the cheapest at Target. I can go on and on, but I would really try the probiotics and anti acids. You can get pill probiotics at the grocery store or vitamin store, and think you can take 2-4 a day. It's just healthy bacteria. People with crohns/have a lot of bad bacteria, which causes inflammation.

I smoke a lot of pot too to help with appetite and nausea, but see u can't do that either :( For some reason I'm severely nauseous every morning (no, not pregnant ;)), but know stress has a lot to do with it. Do try to stay calm, stress 100% makes things worse.

Hope this helps, my friend!!! Hang in there!!!! Typing on the iPad and can barely see what I'm writing, so sorry for the typos!
