Teachers with Crohn's and Changing Careers?

Tue, June 03, 2014 10:02 AM

New to the forums and online community, but not new to Crohn's. I've had the diesase since 1987, and have taught high school for 15 years. Since the recssion, I've had a number of temporary positions (not by choice) in both general and special education. However, the constant stress of finding a "stable" position, adjusting to different schools, and having to deal with more bullying and harassment by students than ever before (with no support) has left me desiring to leave the classroom. While there are some aspects of teaching I still enjoy, the physical and mental stress have taken their toll.

Has anyone with Crohn's or colitis made a reasonably successful switch from teaching to either a different type of non-teaching position in education, teaching a brand new grade level (say, from high school to elementary), or to doing something completely unrelated to teaching? I'd love to know your stories, and what you are enjoying about your new position in light of your illness. Thank you for sharing!

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammation of the bowel known to affect many people. It can affect the anal area, genital area, or both. However, changing careers is not one of the worst outcomes of Crohn's disease.

This blog post discusses teachers who suffer from Crohn's disease and whether or not they should continue teaching or pursue other career options due to their illness. You can get essaywritingland.com to learn about your education issues. The first paragraph introduces the topic by posing questions about people who deal with this situation.

Hi, I was diagnosed with UC when I was 15. Unfortunately a regular colonoscopy at the age of 24 turned into a perforation with an illiostomy. I made the decision to have my entire colon removed and a j-pouch created. I am a third grade teacher and have been for almost 6 years now. Teaching is very stressful and I don't think some people understand how hard it can be on our bodies. I can't imagine doing anything else though. The hardest part for me is the bathroom. I have trained my body to go to the bathroom at certain times, but there are times when I just have to leave. I also am very cautious of what I have for lunch. I've just learned how to listen to my body and adjust to how I'm feeling. Something that has helped me is walking every day. I usually walk 3-4 miles and that helps with stress and makes me feel so much better. I will be celebrating 13 years of my diagnosis in October and just look at all the positives in my life.
