Hormone and Crohn's

Mon, April 07, 2008 12:06 PM

I only feel sick during my menstrual cycle.  My doctor says the cause of my flair ups could be the drop in my hormones before the beginning of my cycle.  I am only 37 but am not planning to have anymore children.  One doctor thinks birth control pills is the answer while the other doctor wants me to add Imuran to the list of drugs I am already taking.  I think hysterectomy is the answer.  All advice would be greatly appreciated.

hi busymom, I am a female crohnie like yourself in a similar situation.

A while back, my gyn wanted me to take the pill for hormonal flares but female crohns pts. cant take it due to it causing clots when we flare.(we are prone to clotting when inflammation is present--it causes the blood to become sticky thus causing clots & the risk increases when on hormones) I told him no b/c of what my GI told me about the serious problems so then he suggested a hysterectomy but that creates more problems of its own such as going into early menopause.

My husband was against that seeing as he didn't want me to undergo more surgery. I have had 4 blood clots over the past 15 yrs. 2 in my right leg 5 yrs. apart, 1 in the left a yr. ago, & 3 yrs. ago I had a 12" clot on my brain that caused a stroke & brain hemmorhage. I will never forget all of the MDs including residents and students who kept on asking if I was on the pill and how having IBD increases the risk. Luckily, I told them I wasnt on any kind of hormone & just used NFP to avoid/conceive b/c it is drug free, easy to learn, and wont interfere w/my medications.   They were all relieved to hear that.

Recently, I was just dxed w/ starting menopause & I never know when the symptoms are going to hit so I have to take it one day at a time. My primary MD was kind enough to prescribe a muscle relaxer for my cramps and some pain medication for my sore gut . That really helped alot.

I hope this helps you & I wish you a life long remission.
