New Job Field

Thu, September 27, 2012 8:38 PM

I've had UC for 2 years and for the past year I have worked in a call center. I am looking for a different job or at least go part time and find another part time job more accommodating. With a call center, there is a very strict schedule of when you are on the phone and when you can step away from your desk. I need something that has more flexibility to use the restroom when needed. Also a job when I don't have to sit all day. Does anyone have suggestions of types of jobs with more flexibility? What about working from home? Does anyone know of any legitimate work from home jobs?

I personally don't work from home, but I do know of two people that started their own small businesses out of pure desperation.
The first mom I know started her own home cleaning business.   Her husband had died after a long battle and she found herself with two kids and no employment in sight.   She began with just one house and word of mouth took charge.  She is now rolling in dough!   This may work for you because the homeowners are never at home when she's there cleaning and she has unlimited usage of the restroom.
Another woman I know started her own administrative business.  She had a layoff from work and didn't know what to do, ran an ad for execs that needed office work done and it was a win-win situation, the office saved money because they didn't have to pay pricey fees and she is able to pick and choose when /where she works.  .One of her clients is an author and she is working on the transcript in her spare time.
Good luck to you.

For those who are able to work, does anyone work from home? If so,what types of jobs allow you to work from home?

Hi,
I'm SO glad someone brought up work. I can't understand why no one else is asking this. Does anyone work?
I have been lucky in the  past that my disease has been mainly under control, and I've worked for very understanding people. Until I started working for a huge company in sales, with SOME not so understanding management. I had to establish Crohn's as a Disability in order to get any flexibility at all. Now my manager is very understanding and flexible to the extent he could be. But it's still very challenging being that I commute so far, and that my company does not allow working from home AT ALL despite being in outside sales.

For you, I definitely recommend getting away from a call center where you're tied to the phone! I'd be interested in hearing from people who successfully work and live with Crohn's and have flexibility when needed. I've always just avoided saying anything to my employer unless something comes up, but at this point in life, I'd really like to be able to work from home or have a lot more flexibility as well. Maybe we can start an online support group for this subject specifically.
