Exercise and UC...is it really ok??

Mon, October 15, 2012 3:34 PM

I was told the other day by a personal trainer that running can actually make my symptoms appear. I have kind of noticed a correlation with that and diahrrea etc but I wanted to know if anyone else experienced that too? I am an avid runner and if it is the case, I could use some advice in terms of making sure I don't end up hurting myself. Thanks!

The relationship is actually a bit more complicated than that.  Short-term exercise can increase inflammation, but it is generally outweighed by the long term benefits:

Not sure if it's the same or not.   I am a cyclist that enjoy riding long distance and I normally don't get any symptoms if I am well hydrated and stayed away from greasy food.  However, for all my century rides which lasted several hours, I tend to run to the potty at least once.  Could be due hydration and carb intake.
