getting pregant on remicade

Tue, October 16, 2012 3:59 AM

Im in my early 20's and a newly wed. I just started remicade for my uc. Anybody ever been on remicade for uc while pregnant? my gi dr says its my only opinion but ive read it could be bad for a fetus. My dr is great and i no she wouldn't do anything to harm me or my chances of having a baby. I was just wondering if anybody had any stories to share about it. Thanks!

Hi. I have been on remicade for 5 plus years and I just had my first child in August. I continued my remicade treatments throughout my pregnancy. The pregnancy, delivery, recovery and breastfeeding all went well on remicade. The drug does not enter the fetus or breast milk ducts so the drug does not harm the baby.

Thanks! Its in the same drug categorie as Tylenol (class b). I didn't plan on breastfeeding anyway bc i have other gastric issues. The plan its to stop the treatment just before my 3 rd trimester. If i can't go back on it we will try something else...I am very worried about a flare up but I'm not even pregnant yet so theres time to not worry

I forgot to say, you most likely cannot go back on Remicade if you stop. I stopped when I found out I was preg and then flared really bad within 48 hours of having her while still in the hospital. They tried to put me on the Remicade again about 6 months after she was born (it was not considered safe to nurse on Rem either back then) and I went into anaphylactic shock since I built up the antibodies to it during my time off it. So consider that too before you decide to stop using it.

I was on Remicade for 4 doses when I went into remission and found out I was pregnant. At the time they recommended stopping the Remicade because it was not considered safe for the baby. Since then though I have heard it was reclassified. They now say you need to do what is best for you during the pregnancy. So my baby is considered a Remicade baby since I had 2 doses while pregnant early on before knowing I was preg. You might want to ask in the woman's forum to see if others have info to share. Good luck.
