My son was diagnosed 2 years ago with colitis or maybe crohn's. It wasn't conclusive but now, after his latest round of tests, it's pretty much confirmed he has crohn's. That being said, he's been on imuran for 2 years and was doing great for awhile until he had some blood in his stool again. They did a fecal procal test and his levels were greater than 2,000 so we knew there was inflammation somewhere. We went and got a second opinion (and had him do a colonoscopy and endoscopy), he is having a mri Monday and will also probably do a pill cam study. The drs are recommending Humira which I am scared about. It took me a long time to come to terms with the Imuran and now I find myself in the same boat with the Humira. Anyone else's child on Humira. If it was me, I would do it without looking back and honestly it looks like we are headed that way with my son. It however, doesn't make the decision any easier and the guilt and heartbreak I feel is horrible.

An update on my son. After all of the testing this summer, the drs say it is Crohn's and not colitis. We started him on Humira in July and he gets a shot every other week. I hate, hate, hate that he is on it but he is having absolutely no problems and is growing and doing so well in school, etc. I definitely have days where my mind starts to wonder and I feel very down and depressed about him having to take this medicine but I try to look at it as one day at a time and not what the worst case scenario can be. This kid is my hero and he is so much stronger than me. I truly look at him for inspiration. In December he had his Humira levels checked (they do this once a year and send it to a special lab in CA), all of that came back well and all of his qtrly blood levels have come back great too. He will have another colonoscopy this summer because I guess that is the only true way to know if he has achieved remission.
My daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's the day after her 14th birthday 2014. She was immediately put on Remicade which was a miracle drug for her at first. Because of the scary list of side effects etc. I desperately wanted her off of it. Unfortunately I got my wish when she started deteriorating and we found out she developed antibodies to the Remicade. After way too long on only prednisone she went on Humira. Although not for most, but for her, the shot is excruciating. Soon she began to thrive and acted like a normal teenager with no symptoms. Assuming she was in remission, we expected the results of her third colonoscopy in 2 and a half years to provide us with the long awaited happy news. Not so. Never knew there was such a thing as asymptomatic Crohn's. These medications are so scary but if they work on your child you must consider yourself lucky. What a horrible disease.

My 12 year old son was diagnosed with Chron's in April of 2014. He initially was put on Remicaid, which worked well, but developed serum sickness and had to change ot the Humira. He has been on Humira for nearly a year and he was symptom free for about 9 months. It is concerning all the warnings attached to it. The Humira commercials on TV did not help with the anxiety; my son listened very carefully focusing on the increased risk of cancer. This made giving him the injection more challenging. I am new to this disease, but it has quickly become apparent there are no clear cut paths or answers, and it can be exhausting.
