Second Flare Up old drugs not helping like before

Mon, March 09, 2009 12:00 AM

My daughter was diagnoised with Crohn's at age 3.  Her first flare up lasted 1.5 years being controlled mostly by taking prednisolone.  She finally got off of that by use of 100 mg of Imuran and 1500mg Pentasa along with 750mg Flagyl a day.  She has tried Remicade and Humira with no success.

She was in remission for 18 months and had her second flare.  She is now 6 (almost 7) and been in the hospital for 17 nights.  After IV steriods, TPN, IV Flagyl, and taking her regular medications she is still cramping/bleeding without any huge relief.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what to try that might help her flare up?  I am guessing it could last as long as a year without adding more medications in the mix.

I would like to have her meet other kids who have IBD that are her age range for she feels like she is all alone and questions why she has to have it.

Hi Son Seth,

My daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's disease March 2007.. she is now 12 years old.. We too have had hospital stays (3) and each time they are becoming longer and longer.. The last time we went in because they were going to do the resectioning surgery... but when they went in to do the colonscopy they found that the surgery most likely would not take because of the location of her disease and that it had gotten so much worse.. We too have also been on many meds.. Imuran, Remicade, Humeria, Predsione, Prilosec, Flagyl and now they are trying to put her on Cimzia.. I don't know much about this medicine but have been told they don't have a lot of info about it being used on children.. but I'm hopeful it could be the cure for now.. What the doctors told us is that since the resectioning surgery is pretty much out of the picture they were talking about a permanent colostomy and... Which were having a hard time swallowing.. With her being so young and diagnosed just 2 years ago we cannot believe that their could not be something else we could do before doing something so drastic.. I hope that the resectioning surgery works for your son and that it gives him some relief.. and we will pray for him.. If you can think of something we have not tried and that it might have given your son some relief.. please email me or post something to the board.. My email is clapperapril@att.net...

Signed.. desperate for a cure... to avoid permanent colostomy..

Hello< I can certainly relate to you my now 7yr old son was diagnosed with Crohns when he was 5yrs old. He is also what they like to call steriod dependt he was on them for a year before we had to wein him due to bone density, he has been in and outta the hospital over the last 2 years and has been on just about every medication with no huge response. We tried remicade he had 11 infusions and still that has not helped him. So after 2 years and 2 second opions I finally found a hospital I am very comfortable with. Still no luck of medications working we finally decided to go ahead and have his first of probaqbly many surgerys to remove the bad part of his intestine, he goes in this friday march 13th for his surgery and we pray it will give him some relief of his abdominal pain and discomfort with always useing the bathroom. He too asks me why him and is there other children as young as him with his disease, I know how hard it is with those questions and the up all night due to pain. Feel more free to contact me via email I too have been looking for another parent to talk to who is going through what I am family and friends are wonderful and always there but noone knows how a parent feels truely but another parent going through the same. My email is christinastbs@yahoo.com. My name is christina and my son name is Seth. Good luck and my prayers are out to you and your family...
