Vegan Diet - Does it Work?

Mon, April 27, 2009 12:00 AM

Has anyone tried a completely vegan diet to see if it doesn't help their colitis?  Also what about accupuncture?  I am willing to try anything to help my son.

Hi, My 28 yr. old son has chronic UC. He's married and lives in Columbus.  His meds aren't working and was never given a diet from his MD. I researched and found a holistic doctor in his town.  Have you heard anything about not eating chicken?  He thought he was doing everything right by his diet, but after reading, chicken (which he eats every day) and grains seem to be a culprit with UC.   He has always been an active runner, but finds that difficult to do because of his need to be near a bathroom.

This is my first time on this site...what a lifesaver this could be.

Try a food allergy/intolerance test.  Not with an allergy specialist but with a naturopath.  Allergists just laugh at you.  I was not able to afford the test so I just cut out everything and slowly added back what wouldn't bother me.  I basically eat like I am a celiac and lactose intolerant.  I also don't eat beans (any) as of yet.  I may try lentils down the road.  I make a lot of Thai food (not spicy) as it is usually fresh and full of veggies. Alternating rice and quinoa helps to avoid boredom.  I have a new fondness for sushi and still indulge in some vegan/gluten free chocolate coconut cake occasionally.  I found I tolerate sunflower butter (like peanut butter) and this has become a good source of protein for me.  The point is when I avoid the foods that bother me I am fine, no problems.  I have been med free since early February and am training for a marathon.  When I eat something new sometimes I am ok sometimes I get a rumbly belly.  When I feel the rumbly belly, I cut out what I had eaten.  I also take a probiotic (35 billion bacteria) and fish oil.  Flax is also great.  I eat a high fiber flax cereal (gluten  free) and that helps keep things moving.  I have a 5 year old and realize what it must be like to want to try everything before opting for harsh meds.  My own experience, I never had much success with meds but eating this way has done wonders.  I was diagnosed with UC almost 6 years ago but had symptoms since I was about 12 maybe earlier.  Never in all that time has my gut been so quiet as it is now.  Stay strong mom, you may just have to cook different.  Of course, I speak from my own experience and no two people are the same.  What works for one may not work for another.  There, I hope I covered myself.  Good luck!  I hope your little one recovers very soon.
