Flares and time of year

Hi,
Have any of you noticed if your child's flares occur around the same time of the year?

There must be a seasonal (and stress) connection for flares. My daughter was diagnosed in January of '08 at 16 when she was severely ill with his horrible monster. Then she flared in late summer and again in late fall. Then, at 17 she had her second colonoscopy and was hospitalized in the midst of a severe flare, again, in January. January is the nightmare month, late summer and late fall are danger zones. Anybody have any coping suggestions? I've heard only that one sould minimize irritating foods, stress, and lay flat as much as possible. My daughter is an overachieving perfectionist. I'm afraid that the character traits that make her a good student and fabulous daughter may be the very things that do her in physically.

Since my son's crohn's diagnosis I have noticed he has consistent late summer, late fall and spring flares. His spring flares are not so bad, but every year since diagnosis in Oct. 2005, he has been hospitalized in late August and again in Nov. Our PGI said that there seems to be a lot of seasonal flares in her practice with fall and spring flares occuring the most. She told us that who ever finds the answer to that one will be a rich person! So, I guess the answer is yes, there is such a thing as seasonal flares--but the reason evades us!

Hello Diane,
My son has Ulcerative Colitis and was diagnosed in Jan 2006and was hospitalized for 3 weeks from Jan 26th toFeb.7th of 2008. He opted for Remicade Infusions and was in remission until January 22nd this year. He had a Huge Flareup right through the Remicade and it continued right thru a Double Dose of Remicade a month later. All in all he was out of work for 3 months! He had to be put back on Prednisone and a second double dose of Remicade and he is working again right now. The doctor noticed, (as did we), that he had this flare at the same time last year and told us that he has a few patients who have "seasonal" flares. So they do think there is something to it. Although, like everything else, it is different for everybody and they can't really pin it down yet.

I am glad you asked that question. I hope someone will respond because I have wondered the same thing. My son was diagnosed in Oct. 2008 with Crohns and he first developed symptoms or a "flare" in June 2008 and as summer approaches I am getting nervous. Maybe someone who has had Crohns or Colitis for some time can let us know if there is a connection between time of year and an increase in symptoms.
