i need help w/school, he has pdd already(development delay) so i have an iep but now what? do i tell new principle or new teacher or nurse and what do i say? he has about 6-8 ulcers in endoscopy and over 100 in colon so i see some pretty bad days coming up this yr...

If you have a crohns/colitis support group in your area, I would encourage you to attend and find out about 504s.
My 6 yr old daughter was dx in June of this year with Crohn's. I found out about filing a 504 for her with the school. You may have an IEP due to the PDD but a 504 is different. It basically ensures everyone involved in your child's education understands what is going on and outlines the accomodations the school will make for your child. It seems a little formal but I am so glad I did it because now the 'plan' is in place for the year. We'll review it again in January for changes and if none are needed, we'll review it again before she starts 2nd grade. Just some food for thought......hope school is going well.

My daughter is now in the 4th grade. Our school nurse has been aware since she started the school in kindergarten. It is now a tradition of sorts that when I send in the "normal" back to school packet they bring home the first day of school (emergency card, bus info., etc), I write a note to the teacher and include the CCFA brochure. This way the new teacher is aware and my daughter's peers have no clue.

I would also get a letter from your sons doc and have a copy put in your sons file at school. I would also let all his teachers know , principal , nurse and anybody else he deals with at school . And let the nurse know all of his meds hes taking .

Hi. My son is 8 and has Crohns. When he was diagnosed last year I told the nurse and the teacher. All the teachers he had contact with knew he had Crohns and he was allowed to use the rest room whenever he needed. His gym teacher was great and always asked him if he needed a break. My son always said no but the teachers knew what to watch for and were very supportive. You are your childs advocate so be clear about what he needs. My son missed 14 days of school last year but never got behind because his teacher always had everything ready for him to bring home. She was awesome, I hope he gets a good teacher again this year. He also threw up in class last year and after he went home she called to reassure me that when he comes back to school he should not feel embarrassed because most of the kids were concerned and she even told them a story about how she threw up in someone else's car before. There is also a great brochure for school personnel on this website under kids and Teens. Print it and give it to the nurse to make copies and distribute to the teachers. Also tell her to remind them that the information is confidential and should not be shared with other parents or children unless you and your child are comfortable sharing it. We also kept a change of clothes in the office for him (just incase). I hope this helps you. Take care and I will keep your son in my prayers.
