9 month old just diagnosed

Sat, November 21, 2009 6:21 PM

My husband and I knew there was something wrong with our little girl by the time she was 4 weeks old - after 8 months we finally have a diagnosis.  She was diagnosed this week with Crohn's.  She just started prednisone, she'll be on it for 4-8 weeks then start Imuran.  She is still in a lot of pain - the doc was hopeful that we would see a dramatic difference in her pain in just a few days, but so far we haven't bee so lucky.  I was wondering if anyone else out there has a baby with Crohn's (I know it is super rare), and/or how long you saw some relief for your little one after starting prednisone.

Thanks!

to Eli's mom:  does your son have crohns or UC? My 4 yr old has UC. Do you get lab work done with the fecal calprotectin test? My son's meds are controlling his stools & no blood lately; however, the test shows his colon is inflamed. I was wondering if others get this test done & if it is reliable. thanks

Thanks all for your posts!  With the holidays I had forgotten to check back on this.

To answer some of your questions - I breast fed my daughter until she was 10 months old (about 3 weeks ago), and I was on a prescription prental vitamin while I was pregnant.  Her symptoms were extreme pain (screaming non-stop, arching her back, etc), diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and/or no weight gain.  Her blood work showed anemia and high inflammatory markers.  Endoscopy and colonoscopy confirmed inflammation throughout her GI tract, loss of villi and blood throughout her tract.

My older daughter had same signs 1.5 years ago when she was 18 months, but the docs didn't listen to me.  Now that I have a doc that listens and another daughter with a diagnosis, my older daughter is going in for her colonoscopy this Wednesday after her initial bloodwork was even worse then her little sister's.

I have to be the only mom of two kids under 3.5 with Crohn's....how is this even possible???

Hi my son 19th mths recently diagnosed with Crohn's
is being treated with Predinsone. It has been four weeks
since we started and it is looking very promising. The doctors, said that he would
to be on it at least 6 months before they begin weaning. Did you breast feed your child
and what prenatal vitamins did you take?

I know this may sound weird, but you are lucky you received your daughter's diagnosis when you did.   My daughter has CD too, and we knew she was sick from when she was a newborn.   Unfortunately, our docs at the time weren't too concerned and blew me off as a "nervous mom".   Though she wasn't my first born, so I wasn't the "new" mom they were used to seeing.

Anyway, it wasn't until a couple hospitalizations, mis-diagnosis and a few YEARS (she was 4) when she was finally properly diagnosed.  My daughter wasn't on Prednisone so I can't tell you of the timeframe for improvement, but I wanted to tell you it does get better and you are not alone.   My little one will be 10 in Jan. and is doing well.  She sticks to a low fiber/low residue diet, takes her meds daily for maintenance, and never misses a dr. appt.

I wish you all the best.

At thee months he was having 7-15 BM's a day.  They were always mucusy (sp) and had visible blood.  Sometimes only blood.  His bottom had open sores as well.  That was really the only visible symtoms his blood work was always messed up as well.

My son started visible symtoms right before he was 3 months - He is now 4.  We have been on several rounds of predisone (particulary when he was a baby) It always took a couple of weeks for his bloodwork to improve and his bleeding to stop.  You are welcome to e-mail me at any time if you wish too mbelehmann@yahoo.com.  God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving!
