Pancreatitis

Sun, April 18, 2010 10:45 PM

Update, my 15 year old son just spent 3 weeks in the hospital.  He had acute pancreatitis in which we were told that it is a complication of his IBD and some medications such as 6mp.  After 7 months from his diagnosis of IBD, in which we were not sure if it was Crohns or UC,  It has been determined that he has sever UC.  My son has tried all medications in every group to try and treat his IBD but nothing has worked.   So, after many test in the hospital, doctors believe the best course of action is to have his entire colon and rectum removed.  He is now facing surgery and is scared of the many complications.  He is also worried about that the pancreatitis might return.  Has anyone had compications such as pancreatitis?

I do know how you feel,  my son did have this surgery  back in February, he had his entire colon and rectum removed.  Our 7 day stay turned into a month due to him getting pancreatitis afterwards.  They told me it was because he was already to sick prior to the surgery and the pancreas was working over time after removing the colon.  If you would like to talk some more feel free to email me at mel_rose_sun@hotmail.com

My 8 yr old has been on 6mp since 24 Feb...he has labs bi-weekly and so far so good. What were his symptoms?

I know the surgery is a last resort for most of our kids...so I bet you all are a bit taken at the severity of this situation now...best of luck and I wish and send you the most powerful of postitive thoughts your way. Marcella

Hi

Oh gosh, I know how you feel!!  My daughter developed pancreatitis in February from too much mesalamine (she was on Lialda and Rowasa) It took about a month for her liver enzymes to go down and they are still not totally back to normal.  She started 6 MP a month ago, so I am scared to death she will develop pancreatitis again but she has been doing well otherwise.

I am sorry he is facing surgery. How scary for a 15 yr old. I wish I had some advice for you. I hope everything works out the way you want it to...hang in there and make sure you take care of  yourself too!

I just want to say that my heart goes out to you and your son.  My son is also 15 and was diagnosed with Crohn’s about 8 months ago.  This disease is so hard and no one should have to deal with all this.  I am so sorry for all that you are going through.  I wish there was something I could do to help.  Sending lots of well wishes and hoping he is feeling much better soon.

Like Lizzie's Mom, no experience with pancreatitis.  The only people I know who have had pancreatitis didn't have Crohn's.  I'm just so sorry your son is struggling.  We'll keep him and you and his medical team in our prayers.

Derek's Mom,

We haven't had the pancreatitis complication, so I can't offer you any further wisdom.   I just want to offer you and your family my best wishes.
