Enteral Nutrition WORKS in Pediatric Crohn's

Thu, May 06, 2010 2:59 PM

We are so happy!  My son Ben (age 7) is IN REMISSION, from Pediatric Crohn's Disease and off ALL meds!!  All this after one month on enteral nutrition, which is more complicated than it sounds.  It has not slowed Ben down for one moment.  Very tolerable, easy treatment.  NO SIDE EFFECTS!!!  He even gets to GROW!!

I'm not an expert but here's the definition from Medscape......

Enteral and parenteral nutritional support are used to provide nutrients on a temporary or permanent basis to patients who are unable to ingest or tolerate adequate nutrients or to tolerate an oral diet as a result of gastrointestinal surgery or disease. Enteral nutrition is administered through a nasogastric tube placed via the nose, or a percutaneous tube placed into the stomach (gastrostomy) or the small intestine (jejunostomy).

The kids don't have to taste the formula this way.  I'm sure ecsmit can tell you much more about what is working for Ben.  Happy to hear he is doing well by the way!

Take care,

Claire's Mom

My son is 15 and diagnosed with CD two months ago.  His doctor wants him to drink 2 cans of Optimental daily, but he hates the taste and it's been a struggle.  How did you go about getting your son to go enteral feeding and what did you use?

BTW, Enteral nutrition has been around as a Crohn's treatment for 40 years in our country; is used as FIRST line treatment in Pediatric Crohn's in Europe, Japan and Canada; has none of the horrible, scary side effects that the big gun medications can have; allows children to GROW and develop normally while on; and provides the massive caloric and nutritional requirements that Pediatric Crohn's kids have to allow for actual tissue healing!!!  A no brainer when making a treatment choice.  Read this book for more information: Beat Crohn's: Getting into Remission with Enteral Nutrition by Margaret Oppenheimer.
