Could Iron Supplement be making symptoms worse

Fri, October 01, 2010 5:32 PM

My son age 16 (dx with crohns in july 2010) has been taking Ferrous Sulfate Oral (iron supplement) for about a month in additional to all other meds. Has anyone found that taking the iron pills can make stomach pain worse. This week he has had so much more pain than in previous few weeks. Thinking about taking a break from the iron pills to see if it has any positive impact.

So my first response is yes yes yes but of course every child is different. My son was diagnosed last sept and put on 2 iron pills a day. He was fine with it until this past July when he started complaining about cramping. I was concerned that he was starting a flare and his labs showed that his iron was very low but we took him off the iron and he hasn't complained since. First we weened him to one a day. Then I went to the Flinstones w iron along with making him eat 1 cup of total cereal every day.... It has the most iron (100%) of any food even meat or liver. There are several kinds of total. My son like the cinnamon. Hope this helps

Color of stool is very important when taking iron.  If it is very dark or black its too much.  If an iron suplement is needed its better to take a multi with extra iron.  Flinstones make them with extra iron and so do a few otherbrands.  I hope this helps.  I have suffered from anemia all my life and i had to take iron supps  they were to much for my stomach so i switched to the flinstones with extra iron.
Good luck

Victor (age 9 w/colitis) was supposed to take 2 a day...that was waaaay too much...it gave him stomach aches and constipation. So we did one a day...went to one every other day...but w/the latest labs we have to go back to one a day...but always w/food. Good luck.

iron is very *** their stomachs, if he needs the iron due to low levels then i would suggest doing an iron infusion. we do that with my son who could not take any of the iron pills/liquid.

I have no clue why my other post has *** on it???  Anyway I will write something else...iron may hurt the stomach (take with food too) and try it every other day instead of every day.

I would place a call to the doc and have orders called into the lab to see where his levels are at.  I wouldn't necessarily stop the supplement all together, you don't want to risk anemia, who knows they may need to reduce his dosage.

Hope he is feeling better soon.  Good Luck.

iron is very *** the digestive system and can also cause constipation.  try taking it every other day and see if it relieves your symptoms.
