Thick Red Blood - Has anyone experienced this with child - waiting for Dr.

My son is having his first flare-up and last night passed thick red blood. It has been consistent since then. He is on prednisone enemas and lialda. I don't know what to expect. In addition, he is havings pain and cramps. Missed school again. This is his first flare-up and I am so scared.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the response. My son was diagnosed in May 2010, but did not have a real flare-up unitl approx. two weeks ago. This is very tough or a 14 or 15 year old and hearbreaking for a parent. Is your son on oral steroids? We are still at the enema hyrocortisone stage and the 4 lialda. I just pray for a good day where he can function without pain and be a child again. I live in long island, N.Y. and presently seeking a support group.

I hope our children feels better and get through this quickly. I understand that remissions can last a long time. I'll keep in touch. Thanks for your support.

My son is 15 and on the same meds. This weekend he also has had some blood.He feels fine though, but when he told me there was blood I was scared to death! His doctor feels it's more on the outside more from wiping.

My son also had a melt down last night about the disease, his doctor, taking medicines,me asking him how he feels etc. I am not sure if this is a side effect to the steroids, he has never before been so emotional.Your son is close in age how is he coping with this all? How long ago was he diagnossed?

Thanks so much for your reply. My heart is breaking. This was my son's first flare-up. The doctor doubled up on the lialda and rectal hydrocortisone enemas. The blood is so hard to deal with you. My son is fourteen. So far his bloods have been perfect. I am just waiting and praying for remission.

I just bought flourastor as I heard it was good for intestinal health. This is so hard to deal with and I thank you again for your words. Please let's keep in touch. I hope your daughter is doing well.

I don't know if my words will comfort you or not, but my daughter too passes bright red blood. In the scope of everything, bright red is better than darker maroon colored blood simply because that means it is coming from an area near the anus and not farther up the digestive tract. Anemia is a very real possibility with IBD. My daughter takes iron pills daily and they have kept her (thus far, knock on wood) from needing a transfusion, which I hear is not uncommon.

I wish I had magical words for you, but I don't. I just wanted to re-assure you that you are not alone. Cramping is also a common symptom. How old is your son and how long has he been diagnosed. Those answers won't make a difference, I was just curious - you need not answer if you don't want to.

If ever you have other questions or concerns, you can email me, I may not have the answers, but sometimes a mom who understands what you are going thru can be comforting, at least for me. onedreamer@juno.com
