What do you all think about "FIBER"?????

Tue, October 26, 2010 8:44 PM

Hello,

We had a visit with my sons GI today (my son is 5yrs old w/UC), we told him that he has about 2 BM's a day and one is usually diarrhea. This has been going on since the summer and back in August he had a colonoscopy and everything appeared to be normal so we have just been kind of watchings things. Today he has advised us to start giving him more fiber to bulk up his stools, he said try to give him more insoluable fiber. That goes against everything I have ever read when dealing with UC and Crohns.  I have always read to NOT give insoluable fiber and to only give soluable fiber, but not to much. We are going to do bloodwork to see if that shows anything, he is on Colazal and Imuran.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated :)

Good point, Lizzie's Mom.  I forgot about the food diary (oh how could I forget???? )  My non-IBD child has been having some intermittent diarrhea and we are starting to keep one for him to look for the offending food.  That's great advice.

I would have to agree with Alan on this one.   Though you may be able to figure out the culprit.   Write down what he eats, or maybe you don't have to, near the time the diarrhea takes place.   I know that we found a few of Lizzies no-no's that way.

Gosh that's a tough one.  I'm sure someone with more experience will have a more informed opinion than mine.  I will say though that my understanding is that fiber is a good thing when NOT flaring.  So maybe?????  Keep us posted.
