Dr. Seems Agressive...but would like your opinion

Wed, January 19, 2011 3:10 AM

Victor has had his 4th flare in one year in Dec...Dr wanted to start Prednisone right away...we explained it was the lightest flare w/only 1-2 BMs a day w/the 2 days of 5. We use cortizone enemas for his UC Flares and he is on 6 MP one day 25mg the net 50mg. We didn't use the Prednisone and he was over his flare in about 10 days...but now he started him on 50mg of 6MP daily and now Azacol. Does this sound familar for UC patients around the age of 9 weighing 55 lbs?

Any input is appreciated.

Oh...also read about Vitamin D and Blueberries helping patients with IBD...doing my research now...

So far he is the low part of Therapy levels with the 6MP according to the labs taken last September...since the new dosage of 50mg daily...we are waiting for 90 days until we take another blood draw for therapy levels.

Update: Victor flared within one week of the Azacol...we have an appt w/Dr next week...his first day was a flare of 5 BM's and since stopping the Azacol and enema treatments he went to 1BM yesterday and no BM on day 3 so far...(7pm).

While we have been fortunate enough to just have the one big flare at the beginning, the 6MP dosage sounds right for the weight to me.  At dx, Claire had just turned 6 and weighed right at 60lbs.  She took 50mg of 6MP a day.  I wish I had more to offer regarding the prednisone.  I know that according ot our doc, they try to get on top of flares quickly because when kids are flaring, they can't grow like they should.  Have you told him you your concerns?  How do his labs look?
