There is hope

I am the mom of a 21 year old girl who was diagnosed at 14. I was scared every step of the way, every time we tried a new med or she had a new symptom. In february, she had surgery. Her anus, rectum and colon were removed. She has a permanent ostomy bag. I thought it was the worst case scenario. Now, just a few months later, she is living a very full, happy, healthy life. I cannot stop this girl. She works, she swims, she goes on adventures and overnighters, she knee boards, she drinks beer (lol) and has a normal life.
I want you to know that there is hope. That on the other side of what you think is the worst possible thing, is life. Get after it with a positive attitude, find a good doctor, make informed decisions and never, ever give up. It could always be worse. Always. But it can also get better. And it will.

Thank you for this post! I'm going to make sure that my son reads it. He is 17 and was diagnosed with severe UC at 15. It's nice to know that there is hope. He's currently taking Imuran and Remicade. So far so good, but you always hope for better symptom control.

Just want to congratulate your daughter on her new active life. My son elected to have his colon removed at 23 because he was sick of being sick and unable to hold a job or have much of a life. Two years later he is a full time law student working on a prestigous law journal and holding down a part-time job..I wonder how he has the energy!
Does he like having a bag? No way? Would he do it again? He only wishes he had done it earlier. College would have been a lot more fun!

The only complications from surgery have been with her bag. She has had a time trying to find the right one for her stoma. Her stoma does not stick out very far so she has to wear a type of bag that pushes in her stomach a but (called a convex bag) and she may have surgery to bring the stoma out a little bit (1 day in hospital, no big deal) but other than that, she has had NO complications from surgery. She has adapted very well although she cannot eat corn or celery (does not work with a stoma, can get stuck) but she has adjusted. Seeing her in clothing you would never know she has a bag. This summer, she wore a leopard print swim suit one peice, she wore a high waisted bikini, she wears skin tight form hugging dresses, short skirts, jeans with loose tops, I mean, she is working it!
Now before she had surgery, she was on a gamut of drugs and nothing was working. she was symptomatic all the time. she is doing soo much better now. She is still on remicade and on Imuran because if the crohn's comes back, well, that wouldnt be good.
I hope you do well on remicade and can get your crohns under control! Jan

thanks for the encouraging words. I have uc and at this moment i am starting Remicade and if it does not work. I will be facing surgery. It such a scary decision, but I have been suffering for a long time. I just don't know what surgery will bring. what complications has she had?
