Accidents

My son was diagnosed last July with UC at the age of 4. He had all the normal symptoms - diarrhea, blood in the stools, night wakings to use the bathroom, etc. - except pain. He doesn't complain about his stomach hurting which is puzzling. Since his diagnosis we have been on sulfasalazine in the liquid form and it has helped. We also discovered he is lactose intolerant so once we took him off dairy his condition improved even more. So far he is doing really well on the meds and we have only had one minor setback where we needed to adjust his medicine dosage because he had grown a little.
Every few month we go through little spells of him having minor accidents in his pants. I do realize that he is a boy and he is now 5 so some of them may be what we affectionately call "lazy poops" at our house (where he is playing and doesn't want to stop so he goes a little in his pants before he can make it to the potty). My concern and reason for this post is that it has happened 5 times in the past 2 weeks which is not normal for him. The strange thing about it is that he doesn't have to poop after he does it. Sometimes he just has a little accident, we change him and he goes on doing what he was doing. Another interesting thing is that the accidents are not diarrhea accidents and there is no blood.
I just wanted to know if this is something that any of you have experienced or am I totally crazy to think it is the UC causing this or is it my son having potty training issues (although he has been trained for years now!)? I am fairly new to the UC world and can take any advise you can give. Thanks!

Have had the pleasure of seeing the "dirty pants" since my son was a pre-schooler. Not really accidents, just "skid-marks" or marks from "prairie-dogging." At that time he was having a lot of trouble with constipation.

After diagnosis, "deposits" have continued. It took awhile for me to realize that he really can't control it. Started sending extra underwear in his backpack (just in case) when he was in 4th grade. I felt like he was able to discretely manage a change on his own at that age, if needed. Fortunately, he never needed to make an underwear change at school.

He's in 7th grade now (12 yrs old). Still see plenty of "deposits" in the laundry. I just keep plenty of bleach and oxyclean on hand.

We have much bigger battles to deal with than dirty underwear.

Our daughter was dx @4 too! It is soo young......I can relate.   It's good that it isn't the big D and not bloody.   Just wondering if it is just "left over"?   I only think this because you said after his incident he doesn't have to go.   Maybe he isn't thru going, is thinking of getting back to play time, and isn't actually finished?   Just a thought.

When Liz was first dx, I used to relate everything to CD, even the common cold....gosh, I was insane back then.  Fast forward 8 years and I'm much more relaxed.   It comes with experience, just like everything else.

I think you are doing the right thing by not making a big deal of it, changing him and get back to what you were doing.   Hopefully if he takes more time to finish up in the bathroom and wiping extra well the bump in the road will be in the past.
