mouth ulcers due to Crohns

Wed, June 06, 2012 6:47 PM

My son has had severe mouth ulcers for 9 months and just recently was diagnosed with Crohns. He is on Pentasa and prednisone and nothing is helping. The pain is so severe that he is on vicadin 3 times a day and now that isn't working. He has tried lidacaine and topical steroids and we are at a loss right now.  Has anyone come across this and if so what has helped. All suggestions are much appreciated.

My son just had the same thing. However, the prednisone and flagyl helped them go away fast. I need to get some multivitamins for my son, especially if they really do help. My son was given Pediasure Peptide to take and that was helping him out a lot...but now he is refusing to drink it, even though it was one of the main things that helped him get better.

Ah yes, I remember the mouth sores well.  My daughters doctor prescribed a magic mouthwash with maalox and lidocaine.  I never thought about a vitamin deficiency at the time.  I figured if the ulcers are present in the mouth, they are still present in the gut too.  Once remission was achieved, the ulcers went away.
Now, when my daughter has canker or two, it usually correlates with a mild flare.

Is your son taking vitamins and supplements?  The mouth sores are probably due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency.  My son had them, too, up until his diagnosis but then he started taking children's multi vitamins with A, B, and D, in addition to omega-3 supplements, iron, and calcium and the sores haven't come back in 6 months.

My daughter too suffered with mouth ulcers.  Now that she is more controlled, she only gets them every now and again.  A few suggestions that may help:   Milk of Magnesia, simply apply w/qtip and allow to soak in.  There is something that is healing in the magnesium.  Another product line that you may find help with is Canker Cover.  You can purchase them in any pharmacy.  The covers themselves are these tiny disc shaped piece that you apply and we have found them helpful especially to those hard to reach/deep/can't bear to eat sores.   If all else fails, talk with your pharmacist about a medicated mouth wash.  I have heard it works wonders, but have never used, so unfortunately I don't even know its name.

Good luck with the pesky sores.
