Medications vs. Pregnancy

Sat, August 29, 2009 12:00 AM

I've had crohn's for 8 years now, and I've taken all kinds of strong meds.....Remicade, Humira, Cimzia, Asacol, Prednisone, 6MP. I am a pretty healthy 28 year old who's wanting to get pregnant, but it doesn't seem to be happening. My husband and I were trying last year, till I flared. Now we're sort of trying again....well, we aren't exactly not trying. Anyway, I just never thought it would be this difficult for me to get pregnant. I'm starting to wonder if I even can. I have an appointment with my gynocologist in a few weeks to get checked out. Until then, has anyway ever heard of any crohn's meds making someone steril? I hope I'm just being paranoid for nothing, but taking all these strong meds makes me a little curious that maybe one of them took away my ability to have children.

Well I too had to take prednisone and 6MP (for 5 years)an sulfazalasine ever since I was diagnosed. When I finally went on remission, my dr. waited a year to taper down 6MP (so I wouldn`t flare) and finally I was only on sulfazalasine. After 4 months of detox (of 6MP and the pill), my hsuband an I started trying to get pregnant and it took us 2 months to achieve it. I am 15 weeks pregnant now!

I think you have to focus on staying healthy, talk to your GI and OBGYN so they are in an agreement about meds and nutrition, etc. But no, most of the meds don´t cause infertility, except on men who take sulfazalazine...in those cases the sperm count is very low.

So relax, get info, and it`ll happen.

I was wondering the same thing about if I can have children especially with all these medicines being prescribed. I am currently taking Lialda and fish oil pills which seem to be keeping me in remission.  Once you get checked out by the OBGYN you should be ok, just keep God first and everything will work out.  First and farmost, calm down-stress is not good when you are trying to conceive either.
