Periods and Crohns

Wed, September 16, 2009 1:26 PM

I have had Cronhs for about 4 years and have had really bad cramps and I  do not have any energy at all around the time of the month. Its so bad that I cant hardly do anything but have the heating pad on me the first two days and taking pain pills. It also affects my bleeding (sometimes bleed alot and at time just spoting). Also I either start early or a couple days late. I have gone to my gyno and had tests done and things are good. I was just wondering if other woman with Crohns have had problems with there periods. And what have you done to make it livable.

Have you seen a gynocologist about the periods? I have crohns and completely unrelated had a lot of fibriods, bleeding etc. I ended up with an endometrial ablation, and it solved that problem.

I also experienced pain like this. From what I've researched the hormones involved with normal cramping and GI cramping are related, so it's kind of like a double negative when you're having your period. I was on the Depo Prevera birth control shot for five years (recently got off of it), which let to me not having periods anymore which solved the problem of the pain. Not all people experience a complete loss of periods, but if they really are that bad it doesn't hurt to try it and see. I think a lot of people have experienced at least less pain when on birth control. Now that I'm off the Depo shot I'm having the horrible painful periods again, so I'll probably get back on it.

I, too, experience increased cramping and flare-ups during my period.  My gynocologist suggested taking birth control pills to minimize discomfort and it has worked really well for the past several years.  The pill is Yasmin.  It may be an option for you.

My Chrons always flares right before and during my cycle. Those are usually the worst Chrons days of the month. Rectal bleeding also increases big time. I have been told that, at least in my case, it may be beacuse my uterus is tilted backwards instead of forward. I don't know what the significance of that is, but the connection is clear!

I too have been diagnosed with crohns and experience extremeley heavy bleeding with awful cramps a lower back pain. I was diagnosed a bout 18 months ago and am not satisfied with what my GI doctor is doing. He does not want even prescribe me pain meds. He wants me to go to the hospital every time I have a flare up. Well needless to say this last flare lasted 14 days. I am seeking a new physician now. The heating pad helps me too but just takes the edge off a little.
