Sore joints and Crohn's Disease?

Sun, June 27, 2010 12:00 AM

Anybody out there suffer from joint pain as result of having Crohn's Disease?   I was diagnosed back in 1971 and was spared many of the symptoms after having major surgery during the same time.  I never did get rid of one of the symptoms however - chronic joint pain.   As I get older I've noticed more sensitivity and pain, particularly in my knees.  I was wondering if that is one of the typical symptoms of Crohn's?  I'd be interested in others who might be experiencing the same and what you do for it.  I am pretty active in sports, have been all my life.  But this pain does put a damper on doing things like running, walking, skiing etc.

I have heard joint problems are quite common with crohns disease and you are more prone to other autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.

However when i first developed crohns i also became deficient in protein. This started off as slight joint pain in wrists, knees and ankles. Then I started getting fluid retention in my legs which made my ankles swell up and become really painfull. Thankfully I started on medication shortly after this and it cleared up. Im fairly sure you could probably have a blood test to see if this is whats causing your problem, I can easily see how it could be mistaken for arthritis.

Thanks for responding,

No I have not been a big fan of medicines, (too many bad, even some dangerous side-effects) I've only used Azulfidine and Asacol a few times and only when I've had a flare-up.  Fortunately I haven't had many since my bowel resection surgery back in 1971.  At that time I had an obstruction that resulted in a perforation around my small bowel and ileum.  That just about killed me but I healed up pretty well.

I've used natural stuff to treat my joint problems for a long time glucosomine/chondroitant.  Lately though I've been taking a natural grape seed/pine bark extract that mixes with water and is absorbed within 5 minutes into the stomach lining and stays in the body for a long time and it seems to work bettor than the glucosomine even.

This is a very powerful antioxidant 20 times the power of Vitamin c, actually it enhances even the potency of vitamin C.  It's called OPC or (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidin).  Actually this stuff literally eats the fre-radicals or poisons that build up in the body that cause inflammation - sore joints and fights Crohn's at the same time.

Inflammation is also a characteristic of Crohns and comes as result of the body trying to turn on itself and fight off an enemy that isn't there.  I've found OPC very effective at controlling both the Crohn's induced inflammation in my gut and the accompanying joint pain.  Thanks,

Hope this gives you some food for thought.

I'm  having some joint pain in my knees now but I'm on prednisone and I blame that more than the disease itself.  I assume you have been on prednisone before,  many times probably and I think that might be the reason your having issues.

I am going to ask the doc for a bone scan after this round of  prednisone.
