do any Crohn's patients here have experience with doing a cleanse? i'm thinking of doing the Clean cleanse in order to kickstart weight loss and wonder if i need to be concerned since i have Crohn's. I'm 35, was diagnosed 15 years ago, am on a small dose of 6-MP for maintenance and have only a handful of bad flair-ups since being diagnosed. any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Hi laffer, I was oddly enough just having a conversation with my acupuncturist this morning about cleansing. For someone with Crohn's, a cleanse should be more mild than than extreme juicing and fasting; more along the lines of simple, basic foods. In addition to being a natural foods chef, I am also a holistic wellness coach, with a focus on helping people with digestive issues to look and feel their best inside and out. not to be spammy, but if you would be interested in setting up a free consultation to talk about your health goals and how i may be able to help you reach them, please contact me chefchristineoATgmailDOTcom

I don't think a cleanse is what you are looking for. Doing something so drastic may send you into a tailspin with your CD. Try working with a nutritionist that has experience in both weight loss and IBD. We worked with one when my daughter was diagnosed and she helped us come up with a plan to help my little one acclimate to the dx and also help her gain weight, I don't see why one couldn't help you lose. Also, good old fashion exercise coupled with smaller portions work as well and would be a safer choice than cleansing. good luck.

I don't think there's any logical reason to believe that a "cleanse" would kickstart weight loss. To lose weight, you simply need to find a way to limit your calorie intake and increase physical activity--there's no shortcut around those two key factors. As for any possible harmful side effects of a cleanse, I think the best thing you could do is consult your GI doctor--or ask him/her to refer you to a nutritionist who might help you with a weight loss program that would not be harmful to your IBD and might even help. For a diet that is conducive to overall health, you might want to look into the recent writing of Mark Bittman, the respected food writer for The New York Times. Here's a link to a good article on guideliens for healthy diet: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/21/why-im-not-a-vegan/ .

I'm not sure I could even think to take a "cleanse" seriously.....I'm "cleansed" every time I have a flare up. Which, for the past month, has been daily. Seriously?? A cleanse?? I'm not attempting to be rude but......that's just not even a word in my vocabulary unless, of course, colonoscopy is also in the sentence. *siiiiiiigh*
