Eliminating Sugar?

Mon, October 14, 2013 12:08 AM

I will admit that I am not sure where this goes since this is my first post, and my daughter was newly diagnosed and we changed doctors and therefore medication.  So here's the thing: She's 13 and her pediatric gi doctor has told me to eliminate all sugar from her diet including honey and artificial sweeteners.  And Halloween in in 2 weeks!  She's having a difficult time with it, but we have everything locked up and I prepare all her meals now.  She is also not allowed to have any dairy products, and needs to be on a low residue diet.  In other words, she can eat lean meat, that's about it from the sounds of it.  Has anyone else been limited on sugar before and is there really a benefit to it?

Hi,

I'm 23  got diagnosed with chrons for about 7 months now,

about the low sugar ( especially processed) diet, I think Its a good idea, even If it can be hard at times. I tried limiting sugar by replacing them with natural sweeteners like home made date puree and other fruit sugars ( Ex. banana for ice cream or smoothies).

I think that the recommendation for the low residue diet is very important especially if your daughter had a lot of diarhea. Food without fiber will let her intestines have a rest and regenerate easier.
Same thing with high sugar foods: the will provoque osmotic diarheas for a lot of people, and especially with people who have irritated intestines. I really noticed that whenever i eat sugar, especially right at the end of a meal, It will make a lot of discomfort. With all the effects of the disease on my capacity of digesting, I thikn that digesting sugar was harder for me, and whenever you cant digest something, It will ferment = bloating.

The low residue diet should be temporary, just to let the intestines recover. However, In a few weeks, your daughter should start re integrating foods one by one to really know what she can easily digest or not. After all, she has to get her nutrients. As for now, she really need good sources of protein to rebuild the walls of her guts.
Its a tough phase, but you have to be patient to see good results.

Hope this helps!

Hi--there is no known dietary cure or remedy for any form of IBD. Different people have different sensivities. Your daughter's can be discovered only by trial and error. Excessive sugar consumption is bad for anyone, but there's no evidence that cutting out all sugar will help with IBD. If this is the same doctor you posted about in another thread--the one who wants your daughter to avoid Remicade and instead take fish oil and Prilosec--you should run as fast as you can in another direction. No competent, board-certified gastroenterologist would recommend that a patient with your daughter's severe symptoms rely on a scientifically unproven treatement like fish oil. This is simply appalling. And prilosec will not help her, because her pain is not coming from stomach acid but from stricturing farther down, in her intestines. In that other thread I gave you the link to the castle connolly database for Top Doctors--you should go there (the Web address is in the other thread) and find a first-rate GI doc immediately.

We have not eliminated sugar completely; however we avoid artificial sweeteners. I often use honey in place of sugar for various recipes.  Low fiber/low residue diet we follow and also avoid highly processed foods.   As for Halloween, even before my daughter was dx, I would never let them keep all of the candy; we donate most of the candy to the troops serving our country and I allow the girls to keep 7 pieces, one for each day of a wk and that's it.    Does your daughter go to camp oasis?  If not I highly recommend it.    Good luck.  Lizzies Mom
