Diet for a severe flare

Sat, October 19, 2013 11:44 AM

Hello! I am newly diagnosed with Pan-Ulcerative Colitis. I have started medications, but am still in a severe flare. I have dropped 25 lbs and am anemic which means also very fatigued. I am in quite a bit of pain, especially of course when I try to eat. I was wondering if anyone has a specific diet they stick to while in a flare? I have purchased the book "The IBD Healing Plan and Recipe Book" by Christie A. Korth and was thinking of using her gluten and dairy free recipes for soups and smoothies for the next week or two as a kind of bowel rest to see if perhaps that would help with the symptoms and constant pain..... I would appreciate any opinions and advice! Thanks!

I cannot agree more with the previous replies.

I can tell you what I do when I have a day that I need to perform at work or have some other busy day. I just don't eat food with any residue until I come home at about 4pm.
So I juice fruits and veggies, drink broth, water and tea but that's it. Then I eat small portions when I come home, then the bowels begin but I don't have to worry about it that I have to run away from a presentation or whatever other super frustrating situation.

It's obviously not for every day but it works for me when needed.

There IS NO ONE DIET, but there is such a thing as non-celiac gluten sensitivity and many of us have it ( I am One). The blood test for Celiac is a ridiculously inadequate test because it only tests positive if there has  already been substansive damage done to the intestinal villi. Gluten and dairy is a good place to start, but eating no fiber helps a lot. Raw fruits and veggies are very hard on an inflamed intestine and can make things so much worse. When I am in a flare ( which isn't often any more) , I usually revert back to protein, rice, and well cooked squash or carrots... along with broth.

There is no dietary panacea for inflammatory bowel disease--different people have different sensitivities, and those can be identified only by trial and error. There are certain common problems--if you have severe stricturing, you'll want to stick to a low-residue diet--but it that's not a problem, then you needn't bother. Gluten is not necessarily your problem--gluten sensitivity is a separate issue--it's called celiac disease. You can ask your GI doc to give you a blood test for this if he/she hasn't already done so. You might ask your GI specialist to refer you to a licensed nutritionist who has experience with IBD patients--that way you can work on creating a diet tailored to your particular needs and sensitivities. Best of luck in working this out.
