Probiotics

Thu, January 08, 2015 4:52 PM

My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 3 with pancolitis. She used sulfasalazine, oral steroids and enemas for the first 2 years after her diagnosis with little relief. At 5 she was put on Imuran and had longer periods without flares but still required oral steroids at least once a year. This time last year she had a flare that left her in so much pain that she asked for a colectomy. Her team at Duke Childrens Hospital agreed after seeing her colonoscopy and we decided to aim for the summer of 2014. In the mean time I started her on a new probiotic. Its sold through a network marketing company so I was a little leary. Within a week her break through pain had disappeared and within 2 weeks she had normal bowel function for the first time in her whole life. A year later she is off all meds except for the probiotic and in remission. Normal CBC, Sed-rate, and fecal calprotectin levels that get better every time its run. She even got a six month break between appointments instead of the usual 3 months. I know from a parents perspective that these are insidious diseases and although I am not a fan of network marketing this product really did work for my daughter. If anyone is interested in more information on the probiotic just let me know.

I agree! Probiotics really help. The live bacteria that has to be refrigerated is best!

Hello! I was diagnosed with Ileitis Crohn's back in 2012 and I never really took probiotics until this past year... I was taking gummies that were coated in sugar, which is bad for people with GI problems. My mother in law told me about these probiotics and their advantages over all the other probiotics; the LP299v (Lactobillcus plantarum 299v) probiotic this company GoodBelly has studied. Their products vary from drinks to yogurts and I wouldn't recommend anything else! The 'By the glass' drinks are the only products in my area but that's good enough for me! The  works to cleanse out your intestines and allows the probiotics to stick to the walls to begin forming new tissue. They have a 12 Day Challenge program where you can track how you feel while testing it out. Try the challenge and see if you like it! smiley Here's some more info and benefits of this drink! I hope you enjoy and good luck!

I have spent over 20 years avoiding every food that set off my symptoms and refused to even try medications no matter how bad it got. I finally found some medical studies that show that Probiotics help so I tried them and it worked! I still get gas from certain foods but the pain is gone. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3033537/
I can't tell enough people personally so I hope that you will all try it. I got mine at a health food store. There are many good brands. Look for the enteric coated ones so more of the probiotics get to the colon.  It also helped to do a colon cleanse to get rid of all the bad bacteria and yeast first.
Good luck! Ann
