My son was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis two years ago. first couple flare ups were short lived and brought under control with prednisone along with his daily 4 doses of Asocol. He has a new flare now since late october. we chose to fore go the predisone and try dietary changes. Well as of Decemeber 29th we decided we better go on a round of predisone 10 mg once a day. This still has not helped with the flare. Did we wait to long to bring the flare under control with the dietary changes? would it have been better to start predisone right away? I do not want him on Imuran, I am afraid of the serious side effects. thanks for any advice

Prednisone really helps when i get a flare up which may be once a year . My Gastro Dr recommends start with 8 x 5 mg for 3 days then 7 x 5 mg for 3 days and so on until down to 1x5mg or less a day . Within 2 days all pains are gone i feel like superman and can eat normal and bowel movements are less frequent. I wish i could take it all the time but you cannot apparently. I found a chinese alternative for prednisone a while ago that has no nasty side effects and is non habit forming its a mix of two herbs , unfortunatly i lost the details and cant seem to find it again on the web.
Used to take mercaptorurine a chemo drug but my Dr doesnt like it and preffers Prednisone if i have a flare up. I travelled to Israel a few times on buisiness and took some with me as a precaution , needed it once had a flare up there.

As much as I hated the side affects of prednisone, It was the only thing that got me out of flares
