Diet, Exercise & Flares

I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 2009.  I noticed symptoms for 2-3 months prior to getting an adequate diagnosis.  Around the time the symptoms started, I had decided to get healthy and really focused on watching what foods I ate and exercising.  I was doing it the healthy way.  The symptoms started, and I was treated with Lialda for a month, and that put me into remission.  I stopped exercising, went back to a crappy diet and gained weight.  I would experience flare-like symptoms, and I could take Lialda for a couple of weeks and be fine.

I gained weight and got to my heaviest point in July of this year.  I started a healthy diet again and exercise with the goal of 1-2 lbs. of weight loss per week.  I'm having the same problems as before.  I don't have typical flare symptoms.  I don't have constant diarrhea.  I have lots of mucus, a little blood in the stool, and a feeling of itchiness and irritation in my rectum.  Sorry to be so graphic, but I know we've all been there.

My question is has anyone else experienced this...If you eat right and take care of yourself, your disease flares.  It's really frustrating to know that you're trying to do the right things and your body is rejecting it.  Is it just a question of getting rid of the toxins in your body and you feel better?

I want to take care of myself and be my best, but I'm hoping that won't mean I'll have to constantly stay on the meds.  Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 1985. I had surgery at that time and suffered only a couple of flares, then went into remission for 22 years.  About 1/5 years ago I had another flare and ended up needing surgery again. My doctors said that my healthy life style of managing stress, eating clean and whole, and exercising contributed to my lengthy remission and quick recovery from my last episode.  I have learned a great deal through my journey with Crohn's and share it on my blog:  www.makinghealthychoicesahabit.com

i was diagnosed about 14 years ago.  i feel the same way about the eating heathy and excercising.  i am 42 now and have been working out since i was about 15 years of age. it has always been a part of my life.  i currently workout 5 to 6 days a week and eat rather healthy...however, i was beginning to have the mucus w bloody stool again and realized i hadn't really paid attention to what i am eating so i juiced for 3 days (which i do 3 to 4 times a year) and at the conclusion of the 3 days i started eating smaller portions, 5 to 6 times a day, excluded bread, sweets, artificial juices (replaced by 1 juice freshley extracted in the morning) lean chicken and meats....only been 2 weeks and already feel so much better.
