ileostomy diet

Sun, September 11, 2016 9:14 PM

I recently had an ileostomy surgery. After trying so many medications and even the nj tube I was left with the option of surgery. So my favorite meal is a bacon mushroom cheeseburger..... ALL of the diets say to avoid mushrooms because they cause blockage and bacon because its so fatty and hard to chew up. Anything I can do to actually be able to eat part or some of that? Also any tips and how to introduce fruits and vegetables. Again all the diets say basically not to eat them.

Hi. The ostomy nurse at the hospital told me I could ground up mushrooms or Puree mushroom sauce. I've been dicing my bacon. But don't eat it often & I eat less then I used too. But some times I just miss it.

I've had an ileostomy for more than 16 years. Mushrooms always cause an appliance leak for me because they tend not to break down.  I'm not sue if dicing them would make a difference. I avoid them, but I do eat crispy bacon without a problem.  I learned through trial and error what to avoid.

Aloe vera is a very good plant, aloe vera drink is also very healthy, nutritious, as a breakfast or drink is the best choice

I'm not sure about the mushrooms...I bet there's a strain of mushroom that you can eat symptom free, it will simply take some experimenting! But as far as bacon goes...there are very good bacon flavored seasonings that have all the flavor of bacon with none of the turmoil that comes with consuming all the fat. Find that magic mushroom and sprinkle.some bacon salt on it. Might not be the real deal, but it's quite the compromise!

I’ve had my ileostomy since May. I know exactly what you mean about foods that we are supposed to avoid. But, the only way to see if you can or cannot eat a certain type of food is to try it. Some food you will be able to handle, and others you may have to avoid. But you need to figure out which ones. So go ahead and try it. There’s three things that I would advise to you; 1) be diligent about chewing your food extremely well, 2) try to eat smaller portions, and 3) drink lots of water. It may take some time for your stoma to get used to more and more foods. I’ve been pretty lucky. I can pretty much eat anything with no problems. For example, I’ve had popcorn, mushrooms and dairy with no problems. And yes, I’ve had a bacon mushroom cheeseburger, several times in fact! Good luck to you!

Aaaaah the old bacon mushroom burger that's my favorite too!! I swear the worst part of this is staying away from food that tastes good!! I bet they have soy bacon, maybe that would work. As far as mushrooms...maybe if they are jarred and wayyyyy over cooked? Just once in a while? Good luck! Raphi
