Veganism!

Wed, September 13, 2017 10:03 PM

I have had indeterminate colitis since 2012, I've been on remicade pretty much every since but within the last year it doesn't seem to work as well. In the middle of July I stumbled upon a documentary on Netflix, called What the Heath, in it it says something about the best IBD remission rates were achieved with a vegan diet. This gave me hope, hope that I can be normal, hope to get off of remicade. So I have gone vegan, I have cheated a bit on it but I feel less fatigued and happier! I truly believe in veganism now, it is still difficult but to me, it is completely worth it. My next remicade infusion is at the beginning of October, if I continue to feel good I may reschedule it to two weeks later to see what happens.
I highly suggest watching What the Heath on Netflix and giving veganism a chance if you are unhappy with your symptoms!

I also was very torn up by veggies and had to basically eat like crap to feel better. I have taken myself off of my Lialda and have started eating not totally vegan but organic, no meat, and gluten free. I CAN HAVE SALADS AGAIN! It has made a tremendous difference in my body. No more bloating or stomach pains, no blood in my bm...it’s amazing. I’ve also been drinking organic bone broth and it helps as well. I put a little turmeric and coconut oil in it as well and warm it up. Just like tea. I have had a lot more energy and am not as fatigued. My headaches have gone away as well which was a huge side effect for the Lialda. I am now getting Entyvio infusions, but just started. Hoping my body keeps feeling great with organic because I’d love to be med free! Hope this helps!

I, too, have watched videos on veganism and health. The only thing is that they are all biased. While red meat can contribute to heart disease, fish, which is high in omega-3's, is highly anti-inflammatory. Moreover, grains, pseudo-grains, and legumes are extremely pro-inflammatory. I highly recommend reading "The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body by Sarah Ballantyne and Robb Wolf." I basically follow this diet and the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which eliminates starchy vegetables. I also consume 11-12 servings a day of vegetables and fruits, which are very high in nutrition. Of course, when I first went on these diets I was flaring and all I could consume was homemade bone broths.

I am also curious of what you eat. With my UC, I cant seem to tolerate any veggies, they tear me up and cause bowel pain, severer blood in stool & D, or cause painful bloating. Even Iceberg lettuce more than once every few days can trigger an attack. Same with most fruit. A banana or skinless apple is okay once in a while, but most others will cause bad gas pains and trigger D and urgency issues. Through much trail & error, Metimucil is the only fiber I can tolerate, even though my GI doesnt recommend. Disappointingly, biologic's dont work for me and I gave up on them. The side effects were also bothersome and worrisome.

I watched the documentary and it had some interesting points. A big question that I have is: What do you eat? I'm not sure how I could eat a vegan diet without having too much fiber that would irritate my lining or too much gas.
