What to eat during a flare!

Tue, November 26, 2019 6:15 PM

I am starving!  I want a meal; however, I can't even drink water without terribly cramping!!  Any ideas on what settles well, besides bananas and applesauce?

I've had decent luck with the U Mass IBD AID phased IBD AID diet.  I've learned not to move to phase 2 and 3 too quickly - and I don't tolerate all of the foods allowed in any of the phases (chia seeds and nut butters, for instance), but I do better with this approach than anything else I've tried.  I also find that quantity counts, as in, too much of anything (even water) is bad, so smallish portion sizes and no snacking between meals.  And, warm herbal tea (usually a turmeric blend of some kind) that I just sip on throughout the day.  Here's the link: https://www.umassmed.edu/nutrition/ibd/foods-list-for-ibd-diet/

Good luck in whatever direction you go.  Hope you feel better very soon.

...some more ones that I can tolerate  ...

Zucchini slice. (Eggs, grated zucchini, flour, cheese > cooked in oven).

Good sized portion of salmon, accompanied by mashed potatoes or pumpkin

also I find that it’s best to avoid sugar and chocolate during a flare-up -seems to make me more gassy and pull more liquid into my bowel.

I definitely need to avoid oily foods, though tolerate butter. I find it beneficial to boost my Omega 3 oil consumption by taking Flax Oil (but eating salmon, or taking fish oil tabs would do similar)

If I’m not able to eat much and/or feeling very fatigued I find it useful to supplement with (hospital-grade) meal replacement drinks such Ensure, Sustagen, iSustain).

Best wishes xxx

It’s probably a pretty individual thing (ie there no way I could tolerate McDonalds so I’m amazed about that charbs!)

Some things I find I tolerate:

porridge (with the softest oats possible. Here in Australia they sell ‘quick oats’ and I soak them overnight)

weetbix (gluten free)

Lactose free milk

Bananas

eggs

A pasta dish:

gluten free pasta (made with rice and/or corn) +

i make a fairly plain bolognase sauce which I tolerate well: sauté mashed tofu in pan (or could try mince meat if non-veg), sauté mushroom, and add a jar of tomato pasta sauce (as plain as possible, preferably without onion or spices)

Whatever you can tolerate. I went thru a phase where I subsisted on a diet of McDonalds big breakfasts and snickers bars. I also found the earlier in the day I ate, the better chance I had of keeping it down.  Anything eaten after noon was iffy
