Seeking diet advice.

Im fairly new to UC and working with my Doc on medicin combos to control symptoms but don't seem to be making progress. Im focusing on diet more but even this is only showing minimal results. I avoid whole nuts and seeds and things like popcorn. I barely drink any alcohol anymore. I dislike most of the vegetables they say to avoid. Most of our meals are lean meats and a potatoe or pasta side. Breakfast is commonly peanut butter (creamy style) toast. Not a huge milk or dairy person. I do enjoy my cheeses. I do drink 2 cans of coca cola per day sometimes less. Don't drink coffee. Lunches can run the gauntlet of dinner leftovers to pizza or eating out with co workers. We try to avoid fast food and opt for slightly better options like Qdoba or Panera. We avoid McDonald's and taco bell but may get 5 guys burgers or go to the local mexican restaurant. I guess my question would be is there anything I am doing I absolutely shouldn't be doing?

Hi there! I also was recently diagnosed with UC and still trying to control my flare. First off I would definitely stop drinking soda since sugar, especially artificial sweeteners will aggravate your condition. Avoid spicy and highly condimented foods...keep foods simply and bland. Also, stay clear from raw fruits and vegetables that are hard to digest and have fiber: such as spinach, lettuce, broccoli, apples, nuts. And lastly avoid greasy food. Things that are normally okay to eat are, white bread, fish (salmon), avocados, bananas, rice, potatoes, carrots, lean chicken and turkey. Of course everyone is different so maybe you may be able tolerate more foods. Keeping a food diary is extremely helpful. I don't know what medications you are on or have tried but have you considered going on a biologic (humira, remicade, entivyo)? It's important to address the inflammation soon so you can heal. I'm currently on humira and although it takes time to kick in, I'm slowly starting to see some improvement.

Sounds like you're being fairly careful. Colitis and Crohns affect people differently . What you can tolerate might send someone else with the disease running to the bathroom. I have a jpouch and can pretty much eat whatever I want but I still have to be careful because if I eat too much or it's too spicy I'll taste it the whole next day.
