low residue diet

Mon, January 10, 2011 7:32 PM

Three weeks ago I start a low residue diet.  It is difficult to stay 100% true to the diet (mostly because I find it boring and miss fruit terribly) but it seems to be helping my diarrhea some.

I met with my doc last week but forgot to ask how long I should stay on it.  From what I've read one should not stay on it too long as the body will not obtain all the needed nutrients.

Can I stay on this diet for long periods of time so long as I supplement with vitamins?

Looks like the direction of most of the posts on this diet and nutrition forum are going the way of SCD.  SCD really seems like the Atkins of the IBD world...avoid complex carbs, eat lots of protein, vegetables and simple sugar.  Hope we dont start seeing kidney damage in this group as we did with other high protein/low carb diets.

My GI prescribes a low residue diet while I am in a flare.  It gives the gut a break from insoluble fibers (soluble fiber is fine) so that it can heal while you are pulling out of the flare.  Think of a swollen exterior wound; you wouldnt rub sandpaper (or anything definitively fibrous) across it.  That is all the low residue diet is - avoiding those harsh fibers so that your wound can heal and doesn't get scratched and scarred.   Start piling in raw veggies, seeds and hard to digest meats in that mix, and you could be in for a disaster.

Low residue diets should only be used if you are suffering from obstructions and need temp relief, but even then, I myself have suffered bowel obstructions and wouldn't dare go on low residue diet.

Something like SCD, or GAPS is far better. I've never eaten as healthy as I do now and no diarrhea, no obstructions, no surgeries.

Low residue is useful when the gut is inflamed and needs rest but for the long term look up the scd diet. It really works. I have used it to control uc for 4 1/2 years without taking any supplements (and only minimal medication) and I feel fitter than I have done for years.

At first sight scd looks very restrictive but it really just involves eating mainly meat, poultry, fish and mature cheese with vegetables and some fruit, leaving out the sugar and starches. It is also important to eat plenty of good fats such as butter, coconut oil and animal fats, and dont use refined oils.

If you really want to help yourself and avoid  immune suppressing medication start reading about scd, low carb, gaps and paleo diets and their effect on health. I think the best books to start with are Breaking the Vicious Cycle (also website) and Life Without Bread.
