Some random thoughts for diet sceptics

Tue, January 25, 2011 8:57 AM

Every horseman knows that feeding the right oils will dramatically improve the animal's skin and coat within weeks.

Every farmer knows that feeding  good quality grass gives good growth of skeleton,  good muscle development and  adequate fat cover. Starches rapidly accelerate fattening to market condition at a low cost. These animals don't have a long life so we don't generally see the long term effect on health.

When the horse or the sheep gets into the feed store and gorges on starches it may well not survive the consequence.

We eat such a varied diet it is not easy to determine if it is too heavily loaded with starches, if our protein has the right amino acid balance or if we are eating the right kind of fats, but why should the effects be any less profound than in the animal on a highly regulated  diet.? Next time the doctor says what you eat won't make a differene just stop and think for a moment.

I meant to say we are lacking interpretation of the good quality research rather than the work itself.

Hi Ber64. It's very frustrating but you have nothing to lose by trying scd and a lot ot gain. Just think one week/one month and go from there. If it doesn't work the doctor is still there to help.

I wish someone had told me to change my diet in the early stages of uc before I had done much damage. You are asking yourself the right questions.

I think most doctors really want to help and would be horrified that anyone thought their advice was false. They do a great job dealing with acute problems. The biggest weakness is their lack of genuine, scientifically proven nutritional knowledge to keep us healthy. Our world is sadly lacking high quality, unbiased research  into the effects of what we eat but, with so much information  now available on the internet,  maybe the ever increasing numbers of chronically ill people will find the energy to make changes.

Stay healthy

Hello,
I'm 18 years old and was diagnosed with UC this past summer.  Before being diagnosed, I had never even heard of UC or even IBD, so I obviously knew nothing about it.  While my diet was pretty restricted at first, I'm now pretty healthy (I haven't had a flare up since my first one back in July 2010) and am able to try new foods.  I did some research on my own about UC and read about the types of food that people with IBD should avoid.  When I talked to my doctor about these and asked if these were foods that I should stay away from he said that I could pretty much eat whatever I wanted except nuts, seeds, and popcorn.  I found that really hard to believe, since every book I was reading said otherwise. I also read through a lot of the forums here and found that most people said the same as what I was reading in books.  It's pretty upsetting to feel like my doctor, who I'm paying a lot of money too, is giving me false facts.  I feel like I get more help on this website which is free!! It's so frustrating!!!

Ahh yes, "it doesn't matter what you eat" line from uninformed doctors.

Actually it has everything to do what what you eat, drink, breath and expose to your skin to.  It is all tied to the immune system.

Nice post Lca.
